    Priest Guide

    Ok well heres another guide.

Does my choice of race matter?
Yes it does! I bet you didn't expect that answer. Priests can be part of the Alliance (Good guys in the traditional sense) or Horde (Bad guys in the traditional sense). Alliance priests can be Humans, Dwarves or Night Elves. Horde priests can be Undead or Troll. Personally, I think Tauren would have made a good priest choice by the developers. They are allowed to be Druids and Shaman.. Your choice of Alliance or Horde will dictate which zones you start in, who your comrades will be, and who you fight against in Player versus Player encounters. In the end though due to racial traits and racial spells that you gain access to, if you are Alliance you should be a Dwarf and if you are Horde you should be Undead. Dwarf priests are critical to end game content due to their fear ward ability, and Undead preists abilities are far better than that of the Trolls. The other races can be ok, however in the end game you really need to be the best possible.
The different races also have different Racial Abilities.
    Humans
Feedback (Priest's weapon has a chance to "proc" and drain 35 mana from the target each time it hits) and Desperate Prayer (Instant Heal)
    Dwarves
Fear Ward and Desperate Prayer (Instant Heal)
    Nightelves
Starshards (Instant Cast - Damage over Time - 5 Seconds) and Elune's Grace (Reduces Ranged Damage Taken for Three Minutes)
    Undead
Devouring Plague (Damage over Time spell that also heals the caster) and Touch of Weakness ( The caster's next damaging melee attack will cause additional Shadow damage and reduce the damage caused by that target for 2 min.)
    Trolls
Hex of Weakness ( Weakens the target enemy, reducing damage caused for two minutes) and Shadowguard ( The caster is surrounded by shadows. When a melee or ranged attacker hits the caster, the attacker will be struck with Shadow damage. Attackers can only be damaged once every few seconds. Three charges. Lasts 10 minutes. )
I choose to be a Human Priest mainly because my pals all play on the Alliance team. My only choices once I had picked Alliance were Dwarf, Night Elf and Human. Dwarf was intriguing, but Human was my choice, not because of spells or abilities, but because of the look. I have to live with this character for a good long time.
General tip: I strongly suggest you find groups whenever you can. Sometimes going solo is all that is available. Generally however the best battles, the best loot, and by far the most fun, has been from playing in a group. The friends you make while grouping will be with you for the entire game.
1.2 - What are the most important character stats for a Priest?
Priests rely mainly on two statistics. Those two being Intellect and Spirit. Priests as with any other class also benifit from points in Stamina for additional health points, and Agility for extra armor points. As either a Healer or Shadow Priest you primary stat will be Intellect to boost your mana pool so that you can cast more spells before running out of mana.
The stats equate to in game effect as follows:
Intellect - Increases your mana pool and your critical hit chance with spells. It also increases the speed at which you earn weapon skill points.
    1 Intellect = 15 Mana

    Also

100 Intellect = +1% chance to get critically cast spells
Spirit - Spirit raises your health and mana regeneration rate. While it is noticeable at higher levels, it takes a significant number of points in this to regain mana quickly enough that you will not want to stop and drink to gain it back.
    4 Spirit = 1 Mana regenerated every 2 seconds
Stamina - Increases your health points. This is important for any class, but really important for cloth wearers since you want to be able to take a few hits before dieing so that your groups tank can pull the enemy off of you when you accidentaly grab aggro.
    1 Stamina = 10 Health points
Agility - Agility increases the following: attack power with ranged weapons, armor, critical hit chance and your chance to dodge attacks. Agility bonuses apply to priests for the ranged weapon bonus with wants and a slight armor bonus. However both are so small that it is not recommended to put points into agility unless they come on an item with intellegence and stamina as a bonus.
    2 Agility = 1 Armor point
    2.0 - Quests
Quests generally provide some of the best weapons and armour you are going to find. Quests also provide almost as much experience as actually killing all the mobs to complete the quests, therefore I strongly suggest that you work towards completing quests rather than just killing things.
Most quests are generic to a faction (ie: horde or alliance), however there are several racial quests and class quests so they will be different from other characters that you adventure with.
    2.1 - Levels 1 - 10 Quests
For the very low levels almost all characters of a set race start with and have access to the same basic quests. This covers the starting areas and all the quests are just to get you familiar with the game. Do the quests!!! They will show you around the land and doing one quest often opens up a second quest, and then a third from the same NPC, with greater rewards each time.
The very early level quests ( level 1-8 ) are all around your starting point. There are enough to keep you busy and get you to level 8. When you first appear in the game you should search out an NPC close to you that has a glowing gold exclamation point (!) over their head. Once you complete the quest, that NPC or some other NPC (in the case of delivery type quests) will have a glowing gold question mark (?) over their head. This makes it easy to tell who to visit to finish your quest. The NPC will also show up on your mini map as a small gold dot, to make them easier to find when finishing a quest.
    2.2 - Levels 11-20 Quests

    2.3 - Levels 21-30 Quests
    Seal of Wrynn
While this is not specifically a Priest only quest, the end reward is very good having +Int, +Stam and + Spirit. The quest chaing to get this ring starts with the "An Unsent Letter" quest that drops from Vancleef in the Deadmines. After many subsequest quests in the chain you will get the "An Audience with the King" Quest. By the time you can complete this quest you will likely be into the late 20's.
The ring is still very good for the level:
    Seal of Wrynn
    Finger
    +3 Strength
    +3 Agility
    +4 Stamina
    +4 Intellect
    +3 Spirit

    2.4 - Levels 31-40 Quests
While not specific to Priests alone the following is very useful in this level range. Anpu of Grimhorn Tribe on server Draenor sent in the following, and I have to aggre that I spent a ton of time in STV at that level.
I love my undead priest that I play on Draenor. He's probably my favorite character. And for any horde character lvl 31-40 the best place to Quest is definitely Stanglethorn Vale (AKA STV) you can fly throught the Q's there. Of course start with the hunting quests from the camp by the river (tigers panthers and raptors) and be sure to have the ppage quest too. as you go along the pages will drop for you, at the end any leftover ones you can buy from the Auction House (AH). Make sure as you go to frequent South of Grom'Gol at Booty Bay. In the tavern near the bank there are a lot of quests including some very rewarding chains. There are multiple quests that require you to kill the same things or get things from the particular Mobs another quest askes you to kill. Off the top of my head I think of the second Raptor Mastery quest and a Quest in Grom'Gol I think it is In Defense of Grom'Gol you have to kill the same type of raptors. And again with the raptors you will later need Raptor tusks or horns. Just keep an eye out and ask around. Also there are a lot of quests that involve the Trolls like Bloody Bone Necklaces and the Troll Tusks. Make sure to do those together if you don't you'll kick your self when you find yourself farming them for hours on end (side note: there are 2 troll villages close to one another, both ruins. Use both, hit one then another. You can solo bother if you pull the mob's carefully.

    2.5 - Levels 41-50 Quests
    Cenarion Aid
At level 50 you gain access to a Priest only quest called Cenarion Aid. The quest starts a 4 part quest chain and will likely take a little while to complete, I didn't complete the chain until level 54.
The quest becomes available from your priest trainer as soon as you hit level 50. He will let you know that the Cenarion cirlce is need of aid and that you should seek out Ogtinc in Azshara. Ogtinc is located northeast of the ruins of Eldarath at location 42,42 (if you have a map Mod).
When you reach him he asks that you find 4 healthy courser glands for him and return. These are failry easy to find off of the wandering courses in the zone. There are several large heards of them to the north and the north east of Ogtinc. The drop rate is low on them though, so it will take a little while to get all 4. Once done, return to Ogtinc.
He will now ask that you find him an essence of undeath and lets you know that they can be found by killing the undead in the Ruins of Eldarath. It is also easy enough to buy one from the auction house before you come to get the second quest of the chain. They drop fairly often though so it isn't a big deal to have to farm for one.
Once you have returned the ichor of undeath to Ogtinic he lets you know the last part of the quest. The last quest is to travel to the Sunken Temple and kill the dragon Morphaz and retrieve his blood. You do not return the blood to him though, instead you must find Greta Mosshoof in Felwood. The sunken temple is a hard instance for a group of all level 50's so you may have to wait a few levels to complete this part.
Once you have killed Morphaz, Greta gives you the option to pick an item from 3 possible rewards. All 3 are good however the most common one to take is the prayer beads. As the saying goes "A friend in need is a friend without beads", at least according to the quote on them.
    The items are:
Blessed Prayer Beads Woestave Circle of Hope
    Trinket
Use: Increases healing done by spells and effects by up to 190 for 20 seconds
    Cooldown: 2 min Wand
    68-127 Shadow Damage
    51.3 DPS
    +3 Stamina
Equip: Increases damage done by Shadow spells and effects by up to 11 Finger
    +6 Shadow Resistance
Equip: Increases the critical effect chance of your Holy spells by 1%
    2.6 - Levels 51-60 Quests
    Dire Maul
There is a class specific book quest in Dire Maul for each quest. For the Priest class it involves finding the book "Holy Bologna: What the Light Won't Tell You" and taking it to the library in the west instance of Dire Maul. The book is a drop from any of the boss mobs in DM. When turned into the library you will recieve a trinket "Royal Seal of Eldre'Thalas". The trinket gives you +10 fire resist, increases healing done by spells and effects by up to 33 and restores 4 mana every 5 sec. It is well worth doing this quest.
Dungeon Set Upgrade Quests (Class Tier 0.5 Set)
In patch 1.10 Blizzard implemented an upgrade to the class set items available in the late game instances. This change it to allow non-raiders to put time and effort in to gain access to epic quality items without having to raid. While the items are not as good as raid epics they are a decent step up in power from the tier 0 set items.
For the Priest class you update the Devout set to the Virtuous set. All of the pieces gain +damage/healing power and many gain the +mana/5 sec ability. Both are a nice upgrade for both holy and shadow spec priests.
I am writing this guide as I work towards my set items so it is not complete yet. It will be completed over the long slow process of updating my own set. It is written from the point of view of an Undead Priest, so all of my quests start in Orgrimmar. If you are an Alliance priest then your quests will start in Ironforge.
You can find a complete listing of the items that you will receive and their stats in our equipment section.
    Upgrade 1 - Bracers
The first upgrade that you can get is the Virtuous Bracers. You get these through a quest called An Earnest Proposition given to you in the throne room in Orgrimmar. The quest has you travel to Silithus to collect venom from the level 56-58 spiders and scorpions located just south of town. Once you have collected enough venom you travel back to Orgrimmar and hand in the venom and 20 gold. Your bracers are now upgraded. This initial upgrade is fairly weak though and just needed as a stepping stone to further upgrades.
Upgrade 2 - Belt and Gloves
The next pieces to be upgraded are the belt and gloves. They are upgraded by a quest chain that starts with the quest "A supernatural device" and ends with a quest called "Just Compensation". The steps that make it up are as follows:
    1) Travel to Mux Manascrambler in Tanaris
    2) Collect the following for him:
    • 25 Volcanic Ash (found in the Burning Steppes around lava)
    • 10 Stonescale Oil (Produced by Alchemists)
    • 1 Delicate Arcanite Converter (Produced by Engineers)
    • 4 Greater Eternal Essence (Produced by Enchanters)
    • 40 gold
    3) Now that you have the Ectoplasmic Distiller you need to collect the following for him:
    • 12 Scorched Ectoplasm (Found by killing undead in Silithus)
    • 12 Frozen Ectoplasm (Found by killing undead in Winterspring)
    • 12 Stable Ectoplams (Found by killing undead in Eastern Plaguelands)
    4) Kill Magma Lord Bokk who is found in the Burning Steppes and return to Mux.
    5) Obtain a Fel Rod (costs 50g from Vi'el in Winterspring) and return to Mux who will provide you with a Extra-Dimensional Ghost Revealer.
    6) Return to Orgimmar with the Extra-Dimensional Ghost Revealer and your Devout gloves and belt. You will be rewarded with your Virtuous gloves and belt.
Upgrade 3 - Mantle, Sandals and Skirt
    Coming soon....

The Balance of Light and Shadow
This is a level 60 quest for priests to obtain potentially the best staff in the game for them Benediction / Anathema. The staff can morph between two versions, one for healers and one for shadow priests. This information and strategy provided here came to us from: Tsunaca on the Silver Hand server.

Thanks a ton for the info Tsunaca!

    Step 1:

Get The Eye of Divinity from Majordomo's Chest in Molten Core (50% drop rate)

    Step 2:

    What you need:

    Required:

    A. Eye of Divinity

    Recommended:

    A. Oil of Immolation x 10
    B. 2 Major Mana Pots

    The Quest:

    1. Take your Eye of Divinity to a tunnel near the main entrance of Stratholme (head west of the entrance side of the water) and equip it (trinket).
    2. When you walk through the tunnel go down the path a bit (shouldn't be any mobs pathing in this area) and you should see a female human ghost. Speak to her, obtain the quest, and go back near the tunnel.
    3. You will get a few waves of ghosts (I believe there are 5 waves) that you have to save. If 15 ghosts die you fail. There will be ghost archers on the rocks that will shoot at you and your ghostly charges. You will also get waves of skeletons that run out to attack. Some of your ghosts will not fight back, others will. Your goal is to let as few die as possible, and not go over the limit of 15.

    Details:

    A. The respawn time on the quest ghost is 2 hours
    B. You cannot have outside help of any kind (so if get buffed before hand and don't let anyone help you. This includes any rebuffing that may need to be done. Any outside help will cause the quest to fail.)
    C. You will be pvp flagged, so you may want to make sure you don't have any of the opposing faction around.

    The Strat:

I stood outside the tunnel about halfway between the ghost and the tunnel (but closer to the tunnel). The ghosts you're saving will come out of the tunnel in waves. I drank oil of immolation throughout this fight because it was more mana efficient than using shadow guard (troll racial). I think I used about 5 of them, but I could have easily used more. I did NOT follow the peasants. I watched them, and mostly renewed and cured diseased them as needed, and occasionally flash healed. I hit the V button on my keyboard to see their health bars so that I could rescue the dieing and ignore the rest.

I found standing in one place would have the next skeleton wave hit me before the ghosts wandered out. This helped. I only needed one mana pot.. and I seriously question the need for it. You could probably get by without, but better to be prepared! (When I did this quest I had around 8 k mana, and am Disc/Holy spec)

You can't really do anything about the archers, so just ignore them. They're going to plink away at you and your ghosts, so get used to the idea. Don't waste your mana on them.

Don't forget to heal yourself. I bubbled and healed myself as needed. For the most part keeping Renew on myself as well was plenty. The Oil of Immolation killed the skeletons quickly. I think they only had around 100 hp.

One other thing that I noted while watching a friend complete this quest is that others cannot (or at least I couldn't) see the skeletons or the ghosts. So while they may not be able to help you kill anything by accident, make sure that any friendly faction people don't interfere or help by healing or buffing you in any way.

Once you save your ghosts you receive: Splinter of Nordrassil

    Step 3:

Obtain an Eye of Shadow (dropped 100% from Kazzak (world spawn), or you can farm the demons in Winterspring (this is probably a MUCH faster route) These are BOE, so really you may even be able to find one in the AH.... it's cheaper to
    farm!

    Step 4:

Click to combine the pieces and receive your staff. Benediction / Anathema

    4.0 - Equipment
Priest equipment as with most classes is a balanceing act. This is further complicated by the two possible forms you can be in if you are a Shadow Priest.
In general though you will be looking for the following from your end game equipment. At lower levels you can use this as a guide as well, but some of the options will not be available until later in the game.
    Equipment Bonus Priority Reasoning
+ Intelligence 1 The size of your mana pool determines how long you can continue to heal or do damage in shadow form. It is the most important stat by far.
+Healing 2 In the end game you will spend almost all of your time healing, the more you can improve your healing the better
+Spirit 2 Spirit is very important as you do not want to have to drink between every fight. Spirit allows your mana and health to regenerate quickly between fights.
+ Mana over time 3 This is imporant for some of the very long end game fights, where a single battle could last 5-10 minutes. Durring that time you will be casting on and off and your spirit will not start regenerating mana until you have not cast for 5 seconds. This allows a small amount of mana to continue to regenerate all the time.
+Stamina 3 Important so that when you do draw aggro you can take enough hits for the tank to draw the MOB back off of you
+Shadow Damage / +Spell Damage 3 Shadow damage is very important if you are doing PvP at the end game. If so you should try to find as much as you can. I do not put it as a higher priority though as many times you have to make drastic sacrifices to gain very little damage. In these cases you are better to take extra stamina over damage.
    4.1 - Weapons
Priests start with the ability to use a one-handed mace. We are able to train in Staves and Daggers for a fee of 10 silver. The trainer is located in Ogrimmar for the Horde and Stormwind for the Alliance.
Wands and Staves are generally the best weapons for Priests as Staves have large stat bonuses and Wands can be held in your ranged slot to provide bonuses at the same time.
The best Priest weapon at this time is a two handed staff called: Benediction / Anathema. It is only available through a difficult level 60 quest. Complete information on the quest can be found in our Priest quest section.

    Well heres the rest

    Heres the rest of it

    5.0 - Priest Spell - Talent Lists
Initially this guide will provide very basic information on each spell, ideally just a few lines. The goal later is to provide more information on each one in a database format or links to other documents. All spells that I could find have been added, if you know additional spells, or additional levels, or spot any errors that I have made please send them to me.

    5.1 - Spell Lists
Spells will also be sorted by the school of spell that they are as below Priest spells are broken down to three schools: Holy, Shadow and Discipline.

Due to the large and complex table format needed to display this information, we have to host it differently - click the following link to see the Complete Priest Spell Listing.

    5.1.1 - Spell Drop Locations
I will troll the message boards adding new locations as I find. them.

    Prayer of Fortitude

Rank 1 - Crypt Beast in Stratholme. It does not bind on pickup.
Rank 1 - Rumoured to also drop in Blackrock Spire and Scholomance.
Rank 1 - Sunken Temple. It dropped off of a Dragonkin < Chao of Frostwolf >
Rank 1 - BRD prison area. < Annoria of Silver Hand >
    Rank 2 - Blackrock Spire
Rank 2 - Scholomance. It dropped off of a Summoner. < Skoal of Frostwolf >
Rank 2 - BRD near General Angerforge < Annoria of Silver Hand >
    5.1.2 - Spell Tips
    Mana efficiency of healing spells

Mana questions are asked about healing spells and how efficient they are. Below is a list in order of mana efficiency with numbers reflecting the health healed per point of mana spent. Shield is included in the list as it is essentially a heal as it adds extra health by preventing damage over time. The numbers are based on a level 40 priest.

Many talents effect how effective healing spells are. These have been factored into the list showing efficiency. The following abbreviations are used to show which talents are used with which heals to gain efficiency:
    IR - Improved Renew
    SH - Spiritual Healing
    IH - Improved Healing
    MA - Mental Agility

    Mind Control Tips

When you the priest are the puller, opening with Mind Control will automatically get the mob you target killed by his friends. This creates a pull of 1 less than you would normally get. You do not gain experience or loot for the dead mob you controlled.
Cast Mind Soothe on the mob before you Mind Control him so that you can get a little bit closer. This helps prevent you losing control due to distance.
When someone else is the puller, Mind Control 1 mob and have it hit another. This will effectively take 2 mobs out of a pull while they fight each other. At higher levels, neither mob can kill the other, and when the Mind Control breaks you can still get partial experience and loot from both mobs that were tied up.
If Mind Control breaks on a mob, he will have unshakable aggro towards you. It is nearly impossible to get him off you, so be ready to fight it to the death. < Scarpa of Warsong >
    5.1.3 - Racial Spells
As a Priest unlike any other class your race determines some of your spells. Each race that can be a Priest provides you with two different racial Priest spells that you may learn. Each provides a different ability to the Priest and makes each races Priest play slightly differently. You gain the first racial spell at level 10 and your second at level 20. Each has levels that you can learn as you progress though the game.

The spells gained by race are as follows (listed as level 10 then level 20 spell):

Human - Desperate Prayer and Feedback.
Dwarf - Desperate Prayer and Fear Ward
Night Elf - Starshards and Elune's Grace
Undead - Touch of Weakness and Devouring Plague
Troll - Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard
The Spell abilities are as follows:

Desperate Prayer - This is a FREE (no mana cost) instant healing spell with a 30 minute cool down. It scales from 130-170 healed at level 10 (Rank 1) to 1324-1562 healed at level 58 (Rank 7).
Devouring Plague - This is an instant shadow DOT (damage over time) spell that causes damage and heals the caster. It lasts 24 seconds and causes slightly less damage than a similar level Power Word: Pain spell, but heals the caster for all the damage caused. It scales from 152 damage / healing over 24 seconds at level 20 (Rank 1) to 904 damage / healing over 24 seconds at level 60 (Rank 6). It classifies as a disease and can be dispelled as such.
Elune's Grace - Is an aura that affects the caster for 3 minutes, reducing all ranged damage. It scales from preventing 7 damage from each ranged hit at level 20 (Rank 1) to preventing 29 damage from each ranged hit at level 60 (Rank 5).
Fear Ward - This is an instant that wards all friendly targets against fear. The next fear effect used against the target will fail, using up the ward. Lasts 10 min. There are no further levels to learn.
Feedback - This is an instant that effects you weapon. While effected it has a chance to drain mana from any target hit, it also inflicts 1 point of damage per point of mana drained. It scales from draining 18 mana per hit at level 20 (Rank 1) up to 10 mana per hit at level 60 (Rank 5).
Hex of Weakness - This is an instant curse. The target is effected for 2 minutes or until the curse is removed. While effected the target inflicts less damage per hit. The damage reduction scales from 2 points per hit at level 10 (Rank 1) to 20 damage per hit at level 60 (Rank 6).
Shadowguard - Shadowguard puts up a shield around the caster that has a chance to damage any attacker that hits them. The shield lasts 10 minutes or 3 charges whichever comes first. The damage caused scales from 20 points of shadow damage at level 20 (Rank 1) up to 116 points of shadow damage at level 60 (Rank 6).
Starshards - This is a 4 second channelled instant DOT spell. It causes increasing amounts of arcane damage over a short period of time (4-6 seconds). It scales from 74 arcane damage at level 10 (Rank 1) to 798 arcane damage over 6 seconds at level 58 (Rank 6).
Touch of Weakness - This is an instant curse that combines with your melee attack. When cast it affects your next melee attacks. When you next cause damage to a target in melee they will be cause a small amount of extra shadow damage and curse the target to cause less damage per hit in melee over the next 2 minutes. It scales from 8 shadow damage cause and preventing 2 damage per hit for the next two minutes at level 10 (Rank 1) to 64 shadow damage cause and preventing 20 damage per hit for the next two minutes at level 60 (Rank 6)
    5.2 - Talent List
Talents are written out in much the same way as spells. Talents have ranks though so are listed as name, rank, talent, points required in tree, description.

A very important thing to note about talents is that you can currently unlearn them if you need to. This allows you to build your character one way for early levels and then change mid-way or even late game to a different style. This is a general tip and works for all classes not just priests.

To unlearn all your talents, the first time only costs 1 gold, the second time only costs five gold (or is it 10?). This is a very nice bonus, it means you do not have to play your end-build from level 1 (well.. 10).

The shadow versus Holy spec debate rages on. Play with your build knowing that you can respec later.

Plan on using the re-specs, the first few don't cost that much. Do not use them as an excuse to just throw points anywhere, as that would waste your re-specializations and make you spend much more money, but rather take advantage of your ability to switch between proven existing builds at certain levels.

    6.0 - Roles - Tactics - UI
Priests can solo, but where they shine is in keeping a group vertical and in the fight.

    6.1 - Tactics + Techniques
    Primary early priest techniques -

Keep your buff spells up and shield yourself before pulling when solo. You can nuke most mobs down to near death before your shield wears out. In a group, make sure your eyes are on the health meters of your group mates. It's your job to keep them standing. Save those potions. They are instant heals that can get you out of a jam.

    Healing Aggro (or threat) -

A very important thing to learn as a priest is how to NOT gain aggro (aggression) while in a group. It is the tanks job to hold aggro and your life will be saved many times over by not pulling it away from him with a big heal.

Let’s start with a simple definition of aggro and how it works. This is in no way 100% complete, this is the basics. Aggro is the rated aggression or threat that a MOB has towards someone. Each MOB has a table that tracks the threat points for all targets it is aware of. It is aware of everything in its threat range (varies depending on your relative level to it). Ignoring abilities that generate extra threat, each point of damage generates a point of threat against that MOB. The MOB will aggro (or go aggressive against) the target it has the most threat points against.

Now it gets a little complicated. Healing done to a player will generate roughly 0.75 points of threat per point of health healed. It is complicated though to determine which MOBS will gain those threat points. If a Warrior is fighting 3 MOBS (all focused on him) then they will all gain threat. For the next example assume a warrior, rogue and paladin are fighting three mobs with the warrior tanking two and the rogue and paladin fighting the other one. Healing the warrior puts threat points on two MOBS, healing one of the other two characters only puts threat on one MOB. In big combats it is sometimes very difficult to figure out how threat is going to work. The threat is added as each health point is healed, so over healing someone does not generate extra threat.

Also shielding a person transfers the damage protected to points of threat towards the priest. So if your shield on a warrior protects 500 points of damage, then you gain 500 points of threat. The threat is added to you as the damage is prevented, not on the cast of the shield.

Knowing the basics above though helps educate you on how threat and aggro works. Now we move onto how to manage it better and not draw it.

The first thing that should be obvious is that you do not want to cast big heals if at all possible. Big heals move you up the threat list very quickly. Also if a tank has two targets and is splitting his attacks between them to hold aggro, it will be very hard for him to gain aggro back and get the MOB off of you.

The second thing to notice is that if you cast shield and renew you gain no immediate threat, but gain it over time. This is very important as it allows the tank to keep aggro and other players to build threat over that time as well. This will help keep you down in the threat list.

Fade is also your friend and should be used any time after a big heal. Fade works by temporarily dropping a set amount of aggro points from all MOBS with you in their threat table. This amount is returned as soon as fade is done.

So putting all of the above together we learn to do the following:
    - Heal over time to allow other to gain threat over the same time
    - Shield to prevent having to heal and gain threat over time
    - Try to use small heals and spread out heals to groups fighting different MOBS whenever possible.
    - When you have to cast a big heal, make sure fade is ready to cast right after

    6.2 - Your U.I. Setup
I find that the best way to setup the U.I. for the priest is to setup several quick spell bars, each suited to a different purpose.

I use 3 main bars. The first bar contains the spells that I use most often with the easiest to hit hot keys. . This is the bar that you will use most of the time. The second bar contains additional buffs, heals and utility spells that you use occasionally, but perhaps not multiple times per fight. The third bar is for those spells that you need to get to quickly, but don't use on a regular basis.

    6.2.1 - U.I. Mods
There are several U.I. Mods available to make your life simpler as a Priest. The main one however that NO Priest should be without is Decursive.

Decursive is a mod that notifies you when a member of your group or raid is cursed. When you click the button setup for it, it auto targets a debuffed character and cleanses them. Similar to whispercast, no more hunting for the right player, just click and forget. In several MC fights this is almost mandatory as it allows you to cleanse more than 1 or 2 players. We have a copy of Decursive for download here.

    6.3 - Priest Talent Builds
This section covers the many different ways that you can specialize a priest through talents. These builds have been submitted by players that use them in WoW. No specialization is ever perfect to each and every player. Personal preferences, play style, etc will dictate what works best for you as a player. These are all good starts though and should be viewed as a baseline to work from. Find one that suits your style and tailor it to your exact play style.

    6.3.1 - Holy Builds
    End game Healing Build
Submitted by: Common build on all servers and forums

This build is one of the two most common builds for end game holy priests. This build tries to get every extra advantage it can in healing and mana pool size. This build is entirely build around the Holy and Discipline talent trees.

You can check out the build here: http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?dxghoZfxtcczqt

When playing it you should focus heavily on using your heal and greater heal spells as they are even more efficient than they normally are. With the Improved flash heal you can also use it to heal while being attacked but it does not gain as much in its efficiency as the other spells.

When looking for equipment for this build you should try to focus on +Int and try to balance +Spirit, +mana over time and +healing, you should also ensure you have enough stamina to survive a few hits. Many will suggest you focus on +stamina heavily, however I find that in high end raids you are generally going with guild members and they work hard to keep MOBs off of you so you don't need a ton. If you normally play in PUGs (Pick up groups) you may need to focus more on stamina.

There are several minor modifications that can be made to this build to make it suit your play style a little better. It's main stay is the large mana efficient heals though and the ability to put down Lightwells.

End game Holy / Discipline Build
Submitted by: Common build on all servers and forums

This is the other common holy build (and the one I personally use) on the servers and forums. It trades in the ability to create Lightwells for the Divine Spirit ability in the Discipline tree.

I am not convinced that Lightwell is that effective, since it essentially pulls people away from combat, and does not even heal as much as a runecloth bandage. I may change my mind as I see it used by other priests over time, but so far, I'm not a big fan.

You can check out this build here: http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?bxRhsV0oZfhtcc0qLqt

    6.3.2 - Shadow Builds
    PvE Shadow build

This is the new build I use on my 1.10+ PvE Shadow priest. As the in-game slang goes "It melts faces". This build specializes in all the evil aspects of the shadow spec, but gives up a ton of healing power, taking nothing that improves your healing ability at all. In PvE for grinding and the occasional PvP this build is deadly.

When playing this build try to equip yourself with as much +xx damage to shadow gear as you can as all your damage will be shadow based. The other high priorities for equipement are as always +Int, +Stam and +Spirit. I tend to focus on +spirit over +Stamina for this build though as you gain back a fair amount of health through your Vampiric Embrace. The focus on Spirit allows you to regen your mana quickly between fights, to grind and level faster.

The old version of this build 1.9 and earlier allowed me to level my shadow priest insanely fast to level 60. At level 60 it is very easy to grind for reputation, farm for gold or items, or do massive DPS in instances (when allowed to go Shadow)

You can check out the build here: http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?bxg0smZZVGxzzxRt

    PVP Shadow build

I have seen this build many times on most of the forums. It is a build made mainly for PVP in battlegrounds and based on the old 1.9 and earlier PvP Shadow build. It works very well and I have already seen a ton of PvP priest using this exact build. If you are level 60, a Priest, and PvP is your thing, this is the build for you.

You can check out this build here: http://www.wowhead.com/talent/?bxMGoZZVMgtctRt

    6.3.3 - Generic Builds
    6.3.4 - Old 1.9 Talent Builds
The following builds were based on the 1.9 and earlier Priest talent trees. If you like how they are described most are easy to convert to 1.10 and use. They are included as a historical referance on how the Priest calss was played previously

    Rounded tri-spec Build
    Submitted by: Shar

This build was submitted through the Blizzard forums by Shar. She points out that past about the first 10 points in Holy your healing does not increase a great deal. She uses this build to heal in her guilds Molten Core (MC) runs and has included enough other talents (shadow) that it can be played outside of MC as well.

    Discipline Talents - 21 points

    Unbreakable Will rank 5/5
Improved Power Word: Shield rank 3/3
Improved Power Word: Fortitude rank 2/2
    Mental Agility rank 5/5
    Mental Strength rank 5/5
    Inner Focus rank 1/1

    Holy Talents - 9 points

    Improved Renew rank 5/5
    Spiritual Healing rank 4/5

    Shadow Talents - 21 points

    Blackout rank 5/5
    Shadow Affinity rank 3/5
Improved Shadow Word: Pain rank 2/2
    Shadow Focus rank 3/5
    Improved Psychic Scream rank 2/2
    Mind Flay rank 1/1
    Improved Fade rank 2/2
    Shadow Reach rank 3/3

Shar had the following to say about this build:

Blackout and silence, admittedly, do very little in MC for end game content, but are extremely useful outside of it. So they are worth keeping. Shadow reach, however, means that if your guild lets you, you can at least have a chance of sticking your dot on mobs from a distance, and with shadow affinity it will probably stick. With the new 1.7 patch having doubled the debuff limit, I doubt many guilds will complain about a priest using a single debuff slot to do over 1k damage.

The points in discipline are a huge boon to your healing in MC, since mana is very easy to drain. Inner focus especially can be a lifesaver if you are out of mana to hit off a last ditch greater heal on a tank. Not much explanation is needed here, and you're really only giving up 15% regeneration while casting which is actually very little mana regen, and doesn't help any of your +mana/5 sec items at all.

After those first 10 points in holy, your actual healing power doesn't increase any more. Greater heal becomes a bit more mana efficient and casts a little faster, which is nice, but you'll be using flash heal a lot more in MC than greater heal. Spirit of redemption is nice, especially with the huge amount of deaths in MC, but your group isn't always that close and it only heals 5/40 people, which is not that big a deal. It's a big heal, to be sure, but most of it is wasted. I just dont feel it is worth getting some rather useless talents to get far enough into the talent tree to get it.

A disc/holy build is great for the MT healer, but for spot healing (which most extra priests will be doing in raids) it's really not that effective.

    Uber Mana Regen Priest Build
    Submitted by: Teleios

I found this build that is aimed at the priests that run very level instances with long battles. This build focuses heavily on healing and mana regeneration/conservation rather than the total amount of healing power. In these long fights like Onyxia, Molten Core and Blackwing Lair bosses you really require mana endurance. This type of build make a solid long term healer for a parties main tank in long fights.

This build should be well complemented by Mana Regen gear. With high mana regen gear and this build, it should be rare to ever run out of mana in a fight. You should aim for +100 mana/5 secs as a goal.

    Divine Spirit Build
    Created by: Quutar from http://www.quutar.com/

This is possibly the best overall priest build. It is not as focused on healing as the pure healing build, but it gets a valuble buff called "Divine Spirit". Loseing the 5 points in the increased spell critical, a preist can spend those to get "Divine Spirit". The priest also looses the ability to consider "Improved Prayer of Healing", but instead puts all 5 points into "Sublety". The problem is that 4 of the 5 points gained from this is "wasted" as far as pure healing goes. In this build "Martyrdom", "Focused Casting", and "Improved Inner Fire" are throw away, and can be swapped with other talents in the Discipline line.

    Discipline Talents (31 points):

    - Unbreakable Will - 5/5 points
    - Improved Power Word: Shield - 3/3 points
    - Improved Power Word: Fortitude - 2/2 points
    - Martyrdom - 2/2 points
    - Mental Agility - 5/5 points
    - Focused Casting - 1/1 point
    - Mental Strength - 5/5 points
    - Improved Inner Fire - 1/3 point
    - Meditation - 5/5 points
    - Inner Focus - 1/1 point
    - Divine Spirit - 1/1 point

    Holy Talents (20 points):

    - Improved Renew - 5/5 points
    - Spiritual Healing - 5/5 points
    - Subtlety - 5/5 points
    - Improved Healing - 5/5 points

    Shadow Talents (0 points)

    PvE Shadow build

This is the build I use on my PvE Shadow priest.

Your battle plan should be the following:
    - Make sure PW: Fortitude is up
    - Hit enemy at longest possible distance with Mind blast
    - Then PW: Pain and Devouring Plague (if you are undead)
    - Then Mind flay
    - At this point they are at you, PW: Shield.
    - Fight and cast mind blast, then when low on health
    - Fear
    - Heal while they run
    - Repeat above process until dead!

While there are strategies around other than mine, I have had very good luck with it and stick to the basic strategy. The only change is on casters I cast a silence right after the initial mind blast, and then recast as often as possible. Timing is important, especially against healers. On Paladins I allow them to get down on health and then cast it when they are about 20% health. This is about the time they usually "bubble". They then can not cast and you can usually finish them off.

    Shadow skills: 36

    Blackout rank 5/5
Improved Shadow Word: Pain rank 2/2
    Shadow Focus rank 5/5

    Mind Flay rank 1/1
    Shadow Reach rank 3/3
    Silence rank 1/1
    Shadow Weaving rank 5/5
    Vampiric Embrace rank 1/1
    Darkness rank 5/5
    Shadowform rank 1/1

    Discipline skills: 15

Improved Power Word: Fortitude rank 2/2
    Mental Agility rank 5/5

    PVP Shadow build
Built by: Borrus, from Guild: Fallen Heroes on Realm: Eonar

I have seen this build several times on multiple servers. It is a build made mainly for PVP in battlegrounds, where healing is not that big of a deal. By the time you can be healed you are normally dead. So many priests focus on damage, and it works pretty well.

    Discipline Talents - 19 points:

    6.4 - Macros
( by Andarta of Illidan )
Here is my favourite macro so far. It heals your targeted group member. If you are not in a group, or do not have a group member targeted it heals you. Then returns your target to the previous enemy you were fighting. It also lets your group know who you are healing in party chat.

Another helpful hint: To add this to the game highlight and copy. Inside the game open the macro window and hit "ctrl v" to paste it into the macro.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    /script if (UnitName("target") ~=nil and UnitInParty("target")) then CastSpellByName("Renew(Rank 2)") SendChatMessage("Healing %T", "PARTY") else TargetUnit("player") CastSpellByName("Renew(Rank 2)") TargetLastEnemy(); end
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just enter your spell of choice in the CastSpellByName() and dont forget to update the rank as you level.

PLZ REP up this Guide to.

Um... I think when you play World of Warcraft with this, it isn't even a game. I will give +rep, but I think it isn't so much helpful...
