Syn's Guide to your epic flyer.
Q: Man, Syn, this epic flyer amount is total bull! I’ll never have that much gold.
A: Oh yes you will my dear little (enter class here) friend… let me tell you how!
-------------------------
Welcome! This is your guide to getting your elite flyer! Don’t you worry about a single thing, with just some really easy common sense you too can have your epic flying mount even though the riding lessons cost 5000g and your mount will cost 200g!
This guide is in two parts. Part 1 is how to plan for your flyer from level 1 and Part 2 is going to be about how to get your flyer if you’ve already hit 70 and didn’t plan for it while you were leveling.
We’re going to start with the basics from day one of your character’s little adventures in WoW. If you’re already 70 feel free to skip to the next part, and come back to this when you are ready to start this massive journey of WoW on a new character.
Disclaimer:Part 1: The Basics
- 1. I'm making this guide to try and help those who are overwhelmed by the thought of so much gold. I am not making this guide to start a debate on how unfair the devs are or how outrageous the prices are. Please go discuss that in the suggestions forum where they will see it. They won't see it here.
2. These are only basic tips and ideas and very general off the top of my head stuff. Please feel free to add a suggestion or tip if you have experience with a profession I have not done yet.
Welcome, you adorable little cow! (Yeah I’m going with Taurens for the guide but it works with anyone.) Look at that tail…. It is sooo cute when it swishes while you run.
Your journey is just beginning, but remember when you still lived in the barn with mommy and daddy cow and they always told you to put money in the bank? Well…. I want you to go do that right now…
That’s right… log out and make yourself a bank toon. Run it to the nearest city and park it in front of the mailbox. This is where we are going to be sending everything that is really great for money making.
Q: Man Syn, why should I bother with a bank toon?
A: Well you little milk producing, shape shifting, elemental, shield bashing friend, because out of sight = out of mind. Best way not to spend your money is to not remember you have it.
Q: Won’t the mailing fees be outrageous, come on Syn, even you can do basic math right?
A: Meh, the 30c does add up, but being closer to an AH and not having to waste time running around to post things there will make it worth your time. Especially since the powers that be (devs) have granted us new and improved instant mail to any other characters on your account. Your AH postings are a quick log and flip to get sales up and start earning you money!
Q: Anything else?
A: Yeah, if you plan on going for a healing build as you level always remember to collect yourself a DPS set too. It helps!
Back to the guide….
Start your quests. Go ahead… do it… get moving, yup… clicky the yellow “!”.
As you are doing your quests, try to stay as close to the start village as you can. If you NEED to run further away go ahead, but the closer you stay the more often you can run back and sell quick.
Here begin your life lessons:
1) Sell everything…
- Every stinking thing you can pick up and sell to a vendor, do it… always… never ever forget this. If you pick up something green and don’t have room in your bags, go ahead and toss something that is grey because the green will net you more money.
2) Always.. always… loot everything…
- Leave no bug unturned, leave no enemy untouched. You never know when that rare level 19 twink blue piece (mmmm money) or at higher levels, when that random purple epic will drop. Every time you leave something un-looted you risk loosing money.
3) Twinks… and why we love to hate them…..
- a. Even if you don’t have room for the love of god make sure you at least check to see what is in there.
4) The AH….your love, your bane
- a. These guys, can be the bread and butter for your first mount. My mage had the money for hers at level 21 because I found an awesome clothy twink piece.
b. When you get a random blue bind on equip piece around levels 17-19, 27-29, or 37-39ish you have potential for making lots of money. Check your favorite WoW site (Thottbot: World of Warcraft is one) for information on how much you should sell this piece for.
- a. Anything that you have that is white quality or better can be sold on the AH. Even those greens you get out of RFC or the Stockade (I think that’s the alliance equivalent). Sell them on the AH. A vendor may net you 5 silver for a piece where you can AH it for 8 to 10. You will learn what to keep and what not to. Rare things say for cooking, are great. Small eggs, raptor ribs etc. Spider silk for tailors, all kinds of neat stuff.
b. Always check your AH first to see how much an item or stack is going for and undercut it by a few silver (gold at the higher levels).
- *** But I could have made more money! Yeah you could have, but guess whose stuff is going to sell the fastest? And if you put 7 stacks of something up there guess whose stuff is going to go first, even if it is only a 2 silver buyout difference? That’s right! Yours.
*** Always save big sells for the weekend, and always use the 24 hour time limit. Weekends = more people on and the longer you have things up there the more likely you will be that they sell.
- c. DO NOT BUY THINGS OFF THE AH
- i. Trust me, there is nothing you need off the AH. Especially if you don’t have a main to send your character 10 start up gold.
ii. You don’t need armor, you don’t need weapons, trust me. You will get all those things questing.
iii. You don’t need supplies for your professions unless you were silly enough to pick 2 non-gathering ones. (like engineering and tailoring) Which leads to….
5) Professions**Don’t forget to use your bank toon. If you are in the middle of nowhere and don’t want to fly back to the AH at a city and there is a mailbox at your quest turn in mail yourself everything you are going to AH. Flip your toons, post it, and TA DA!
- Q: Hey Syn, which professions should I get? Some of them seem really interesting!
A: Yeah they do don’t they? Unfortunately, a lot of the things you are going to be making, until you get to 60 -70, won’t do a whole lot for you and there won’t be a large demand for sales wise. But… you can plan for them.
a. Get the mod called “Gatherer” if you have mining or herbalism, trust me…. You will not regret it.
b. Gathering professions – Money makers… oh yeah…1. Lets say that you our cow friend will eventually want to be a leather worker. Take skinning and mining or herbalism. (I don’t recommend ever taking mining and herbalism as they both require tracking and you can only track one thing at a time so you are bound to miss some great stuff.) When you come across a new item while gathering look it up on one of those websites again. If it is something you may need from mining (like a type of gem) save a stack, and mail them to your bank toon, so when you hit 70, drop your mining and get leather working you have some of those weird things saved up.
- i. The gathering professions are some of the best money makers out there.
ii. You can plan for your future profession change with them; you do have that handy bank toon you know.
2. Otherwise, gather everything you come across. See a mine over yonder… go to it. Kill the animals in the way, loot them, skin them, and get your mine. Looky there… loot, skins, and experience all while trying to get to that mine so you can sell the ore on the AH! ::Syn begins singing theme song to “The Apprentice”::
3. Don’t forget, when you are 70 going back to your starting zone and slaughtering everything in your path to get the items you need for your real profession is going to be really easy and well worth the time you spend using gathering skills to get money while you are leveling.
So just remember these really easy, common sense things and I promise you will never have to worry about money for your mounts.
Part 2: 70
So, you’re 70, you’ve got your flying mount (trust me, there is no reason not to have the 1000g within a few days of turning 70), but now you’re seeing me and others like me zipping across the map and beating even the taxis to their destination points!
Q: WoW (hee hee) Syn, those were some great tips for people just starting the long haul to 70, but I’m already there…. What do I do?
A: Really hon, it is going to be easier for you than it will for them. You’re just going to focus a bit for a week or two and you will be okay, I promise. If you are a healing build, I hope you have built a DPS set, if you didn’t, start building one as you kill things and run instances.
1) Selling….
- a. I’m going to start off by saying you, like our small cow friend from the other section, are hereby commanded to always loot and sell everything. Never ever garbage something unless you have to in order to pick up something worth more to a vendor or on the AH. You may think it is only 30s for that stack of 5 of some crap but I don’t care. If you were standing in shadowmoon with 5199g and 70s what would you do? That’s right, you’d go kill something to get that 30s.
b. 30s is 30s and it all adds up
2) QuestingZones
- a. So, what quests do you have left? Don’t say you don’t have any, I know you do. I hit 70 after only doing about 20 quests in Netherstorm and never even touched Shadowmoon until after 70.
- i. So… GO… do those quests. They give great money once you hit 70, some of the group quests giving up to 28g just for one quest.
b. Okay, so maybe you don’t have that many left. You may have done a lot of them post 70 to get your first flying mount or maybe to buy mats to get your purple gear/blades etc. from your profession, okay cool… I get it.
c. I’m serious though.
- i. Go back to every zone you were in and pick up quests you never did, talk to everyone. Even if there is no “!” over their head, try talking to them, they may just have a quest you dropped and out leveled… guess what, you will still get $$. (Remember this is from Horde perspective so you’ll have to do a little research if you are alliance)
3) Professions – Get the Mod “Gatherer” if you have a gathering profession. Just do it. Now! Go!.....................Got it? Good.
- 1. Hellfire, 3 flights paths there, check them all. Don’t forget the small Cenerian camp to the west of the BE towers.
2. Zangamarsh, 2 flight paths, plus the Cenerion Expedition town, plus the Sporegarr people in the SW side of the map.
3. Terrokar, 2 flight paths, plus the camp of dranai to the west of Auchinedon. Plus the constant stream of quests you get inside Shatt.
4. Nagrand, 1 flight path, plus random NPCs in the zone that give you escorts, and other quests. Don’t forget the guy with the Netherdrakes outside the forge camps.
5. Blade’s Edge, 3 flight paths not including the one in Ogri’la. Locate them for your faction and go to them.
6. Netherstorm, 3 flight paths, check them all
7. Shadowmoon, 2 flight paths, your faction, and the one for whether you are aldor/scryer
- a. Also the start of the Netherdrake quests. NPC for it is located just north of Scryer town, he walks around in the big crystals.
b. There is also a guy who will introduce you to the Ashtongue Deathsworn held in the Warden’s cage. You may need a lead up to him, I’m not sure, but a quick Thottbot check will figure that out for you ( I can’t do everything for ya!!!)1. Enchanting:
- a. You should also have a bank toon to be using for the AH, especially since there is no freaking AH in the New World (horrible rotten idea on Blizzard’s part imho).
b. Each of your professions has something to give you back in regards to money. I’m not familiar with all of them, but I know that with a little creative thinking you can get there. Here are some I’ve had personal experience with.
- i. This will make things easier for you
ii. It will also prevent you from spending all that money you are getting.2. Tailoring: Those Netherweave bags are hot, hot hot!
- a. DE everything, keep some of the mats for yourself, and some to sell on the AH
b. Wizard and Mana oils. You'll need herbs for this, but if you find cheap stacks on the AH the turn around profit can be very nice.
- a. Also, while you are grinding up your tailoring don’t just sell stuff to a vendor, look for an enchanter. Ask them to DE everything for you and offer to tip them say, 5g. You will get a lot back in the way of mats off the AH. Make sure it is someone you trust, or that you are on team with them so you can see everything they get and make sure you aren’t getting ripped off. Report them if they do. They will get banned until the mats or the items are returned.
******Remember, always undercut your competition! You will sell your mats faster, even if for a gold or two less, but hey, just like you… that buyer is concerned with $$ and wants to spend as little as possible!
3. Skinning: Mmmm… clefthoof,4. Mining
- a. The leather from these big guys sells like mad, it’s a little overpriced on my server (least in my opinion) 50g a stack, but eh, check your server’s prices.
b. The meat from these big guys is great for cooks to make some stat granting treats.5. Herbalism
- a. Adamantite Ore: This stuff sells for 25g a stack on my server, and I have never had a stack not sell within 24 hours. It is just that important to various professions.
b. Fel Iron
- i. Know a Jewelcrafter? Have them prospect it for you, but you run the risk of not getting a nice blue gem and losing money, but really this is all your own choice and gamble.
c. Khorium, Eternium
- i. When I was working towards my flyer I grabbed it all. It is a fairly common ore though so I usually see it for 8g a stack max on my server. Now I just ignore it unless it happens to be near me.
- i. Meh, I’m greedy, I don’t sell these. I may want a BS some day and they will help me out more so they are mine! All mine! I have seen eternium listed for 55g a stack though so if you wanna sell it go for it!
6. Non-gathering ways to get money!
- a. If you aren’t an alchemist and can’t make the potions yourself learn what herbs are used for the most important potions.
- i. Mana pots, Flask of Titans, Wizard Oil, Mana Oil, learn these herbs and go get them. Sell them.
So you don’t feel like gathering stuff all day long. I understand, but honestly, unless you’re willing to do some sort of grinding you’re not going to get the money.5) Daily Quests
- 1. Blood Elves and Demons in Netherstorm
2. AH everything else if you want to try it, but at this point in the game it is difficult to gauge what will sell and what won't because most people have instance blues and epics.
- a. These guys are great money makers. They drop the items required for Scryer and Aldor rep (thus making you money if you sell them on the AH).
b. I never hunted the demons, just the Blood Elves so I know the BE’s drop tons and tons of Netherweave also. Sell it.
c. Vendor everything grey drops from them.(greys too)
3. Get an Enchanter to DE the greens for you, sell the mats
4. Primals
- i. All of them… Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Mana, Shadow, Life, gather them sell them on AH in the form of motes or primals, it doesn’t matter.
ii. Don’t use Elemental Plateau, it is so well known that it is always a fight for your kills. (On a PvP server it can often be a WAR zone.) There are plenty of other great spots to collect each type of Primal. Find your own favorite little niche and use it1. Skettis Area
- a. These are the quickest and easiest way to get at least 66g each day.
- i. There are 6 total you can do before getting your epic flyer.
So my dear friends, we have come to the end off our journey. You now have a good idea on how to get your epic flyer. Feels good doesn’t it?
- a. Fires Over Skettis – an easy 2 minute daily bombing. 11g
b. Escape From Skettis – an easy escort, but it can get a little rough on a pvp server, so advertise you are looking to do it and you will almost always get a group.2. Ogri’la –
- i. The NPC spawns in 3 different spots and respawns right as it is completed by someone else. Get the cords from Thottbot: World of Warcraft
ii. If the birds in the air bother you just fly straight up. They can’t hit you and keep up and you will loose their agro
- To get started here you must complete the chain of group quests given to you by the Ogre who sits on the tower at the arena in Blades Edge. There are also a couple of quests you will have to do in Ogri’la to get access to the dailies, but hey, its all money honey!
- a. Bomb Them Again! – A tricky but easy bombing quest. Strafing constantly helps a lot. You will be shot at by the cannons anytime you are on your flying mount, even if you are sitting on the ground.
b. Wrangle More Aether Rays! - Fun and Silly. Not hard to figure out.
c. Apexis Emanations! – Simon game in WoW, fun and easy, just bring a piece of paper.
d. Banish more Demons – Not too hard, but only opens to you when you are honored with the Ogres.
****Tips to this zone:****
a. Once you are honored with the Sky guard you can ride a ray back and forth between skettis and ogri’la.
b. Those Apexis shards you are picking up all over the place…they are important. Keep about 20-30 on you at all times. Any extras you get can be turned into potions for 5 for 50 shards at the forge camp to the north. The potions can then be sold for over a gold a stack to an ogre vendor.
This guide, while long, is not in any way the only means to gaining money. Get creative, think about what you enjoy doing, what your character is good at, what seems the easiest for your play time, and server type.
When done at a relaxed pace you’ll have your flyer in about a month as long as you just dedicate yourself to a little work each day.
If you really focus you can get it in 1-2 weeks.
I promise you... while you may be a little nervous standing in front of the trainer, getting ready to spend 5200g, once you have that mount you will never, ever regret spending that money.
Good Luck!
