Introduction
I’ve been meaning to write up a few twink building guides before cata comes out, so people will be able to grab some of the grandfathered items that will still be BiS. No one’s completely positive exactly what all of those items will be yet, so it’s a pretty good idea to grab whats good now, which will make upgrading come cata much easier. My favorite bracket by far, is 29s, and I became very well known on my twinks for playing both my rogue and my druid, so I’ll start with those. Hopefully I’ll have the druid guide written up by late this week.
If you want to play your twink right away, make it in the reckoning BG for US servers, and Cruelty for EU servers, since that is where all 29s migrated. If you want to come to reckoning US, our most populated twink servers are: Windrunner (by far best option for alliance, but some top quality horde as well) Also Skywall, and Dragonmaw are both horde options, and both have a small population of alliance as well. Shadowsong would be the only other semi option, since they have a small horde population. If you don’t mind holding tight for a while on your own server, you can wait for cata to come out when xbg’s allow you to play with people from every server.
Now on to the guide.
Stat Priority:
Agility>Attack Power >Stamina> Hit >Strength.
The main priority for rogues at this level is agi by far. It provides most of your AP, gives you solid crit, and dodge. You’re generally the burst deeps, so you want to focus on damage stats and let your heals worry about keeping you alive. AP is also a great stat, which you’ll mostly get with your BoA’s. Certain spec’s will stack a lot of AP, but it’s a fairly gimp build, which I wouldn’t recommend (but I will discuss later) Stam is ofc an important stat in pvp, since its pretty hard to kill people while you’re dead. Its no agi, but its pretty damn important. +hit is EXTREMELY important. The only reason I listed it so low is that its very easy to hit the soft cap at 29. +21 hit is the cap for yellow hits at 29, and you get +15 from your glove chant, and 5 from your boa shoulders (or boot chant if you have no boa’s) “but kazin! 15+5=20!=21” yeah, so you wont be AT the cap, but you’ll be close enough without having to sacrifice something else important. Strength gives only 1 ap per str, and nothing more, so its very low priority. The only time you should ever chant for str is on your bracers with the pure AP rogue build.
Best in Slot Gear break-down:

Feet:[]Defiler's Leather Boots - Item - World of Warcraft with either +7 Agility or +7 stamina enchantments depending on what you want to stack more of, although I’d recommend agi. []Harbinger Boots - Item - World of Warcraft your choice of +7 Agility or +7 Stamina enchantment
Rings: There are so many rings you could use. Ideally you would want to have two rings from Gnomeregan, but a lot of people don't have the patience to make that happen ha ha. Here are a few that you could use
[Charged Gear - Item - World of Warcraft the Monkey]
[Charged Gear of the Tiger]
[Charged Gear of Eluding]
All []Charged Gear - Item - World of Warcraft of the... rings drop from the final boss in Gnomeregan
[]Legionnaire's Band - Item - World of Warcraft (Purchased from the Warsong Quartermaster in the Barrens)
[]Deadman's Hand - Item - World of Warcraft (Drops from Arcanist Doan, the final boss in Scarlet Monastary's Library wing. This is great if you have a hunter kiting you)
Trinkets:
[]Inherited Insignia of the Horde - Item - World of Warcraft /[]Insignia of the Horde - Item - World of Warcraft (The BoA comes from the vendor in Wintergrasp, the other is bought in the officer's lounge in Orgrimmar's Valley of Honor)
[]Arena Grand Master - Item - World of Warcraft (to obtain this you must loot the chest on the floor of the Gurubashi Arena twelve times and get the trinkets. Turn the quest that is initiated by the []Arena Master - Item - World of Warcraft trinket into Short John Mithril to recieve your[Arena Grand Master ] )
There are other trinkets available to you, such as the []Defiler's Talisman - Item - World of Warcraft, and all the eng trinkets like the []Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector - Item - World of Warcraft,[]Gnomish Shrink Ray - Item - World of Warcraft, []Minor Recombobulator - Item - World of Warcraft, []Goblin Mortar - Item - World of Warcraft, and []Gnomish Cloaking Device - Item - World of Warcraft. (also if you’re a gnome you can use the []Gnomish Death Ray - Item - World of Warcraft, although it is epic cheese gayness, please don’t use this item in our bracket) Human rogues in arena often go with AGM/Mortar, which is considered slightly cheesy by many twinks as well since the mortar is OP in our bracket, but its not as frowned upon as the death ray.
Weapons:
Daggers:
[]Torturing Poker - Item - World of Warcraft Best mainhand weapon right now whether or not you have Boa’s (dropped by Interrogator Vishas in Scarlet Monastery's Graveyard Quarter) +5 Weapon Damage is the only enchantment to put on this weapon. Some will argue +15 agi, but they would be wrong. If anyone is interested in the math I’ll post it up later.
[]Balanced Heartseeker - Item - World of Warcraft +15 Agility enchantment
[]Vendetta - Item - World of Warcraft +15 agi (one of the rarest 29 items there is. Good luck finding one, and if you do, expect to pay 5k+gold, but it’s the best offhand for a rogue due to the 1.3 speed for refreshing poisons.)
Ranged:
[]Throat Piercers - Item - World of Warcraft (from a vendor on horde side only in ghostlands. These can be sold on the neutral ah for 200+ gold. I know it sounds crazy but ally twinks will pay it. These are BiS by far since twinks are bandage junkies and bow’s take too long to fire.)
[Charmed Ancient Bone Bow - Item - World of Warcraft ]
[Naga Heartpiercer - Item - World of Warcraft ]
Axe:
[]Crescent of Forlorn Spirits - Item - World of Warcraft - Alliance only quest reward upon completing The Legend of Stalvan quest. Can be Enchanted with Mongoose or +20 Agil
Macros:
Spammable Sap
#showtooltip sap
/cleartarget
/targetenemy
/cast sap
Kick with Focus Modifier
/cast [nomodifier] Kick; [modifier:alt,target=focus] kick
Use the above macro a template for any other ability you would like to have a focus macro for.
Gouge then Bandage
/cast Gouge
/stopcasting
/use [target=player] Heavy Runecloth Bandage
Consumables
You're not a real twink unless you use consumables. Try outclicking someone on a flag drop if they throw a grenade and you dont. Not even rottentomato, or ohjay can do that (legendary flag clickers of 29s) Thats just one reason you always come prepared. There are a ton of consumables, so I'm bound to forget quite a few, so check back in this section for updates, and I'll try to get all the cool ones listed eventually.
Iron Grenade - Item - World of Warcraft The most important consumable there is in 29 twinking. Cheap to make, nice dps boost, and you can use them while running. Takes practice to get the timing down, but once you do you can hit people from a huge range (making this basically your only viable ranged attack). Not only is it great for right as the flag is about to drop (whether it be offense or defense), but it also keeps hunters from kiting you, interrupts casters, slows their fc, cc's heals, and even adds a dps boost. If you're not using 10+ a game you're doing it wrong.
The Big One - Item - World of Warcraft Pricey but fun. HUGE radius, so its great for when the enemy is clumped together. My fav use for these is when their heals are all standing next to eachother, and you get them all at once so you can burst down their dps/fc. 5 sec incapacitate is nothing to scoff at, especially with a radius that big. Oh, and it deals a ton of damage for a 29 consumable to boot.
Mithril Frag Bomb - Item - World of Warcraft Poor mans big one. Faster cast time, but smaller radius, dmg, and less stun time. Also not as good as iron grenades imo since you have to stand still to use it. Regardless, you'll see someone bust these out every once in a while, but not worth the gold imo. Use nades.
Goblin Sapper Charge - Item - World of Warcraft BOOM BOOM SPLOSION!!!!11 These are so ridiculously OP theyre typically the first thing mentioned in any "banned from premades" discussion. Using these repeatedly will likely earn you an angry @ post on the bg forums, since they're completely unfair. Huge radius, unfair damage, and they're not too insanely expensive either. For added lulz be on vent with a few buddies, and coordinate using these all at the same time. You can literally have 3-4 coordinated people kamikaze into their initial push and kill all 10 of them if you do it right.
Flash Bomb - Item - World of Warcraft The bane of all druid FC's. Oh look I'm a rogue who has fear on a 1 min cd. Thats fair. These typically are banned in premades, however arent as looked down upon in pugs, so you dont have to worry about getting flamed on the forums for using them. Fun to fear ghostwolf's, druid fc's and I also like to toss one of these on my pocket healer if he has a few hunter pets on him.
Elixir of Agility - Item - World of Warcraft Agi elixir, pretty self explanatory. If you're on a budget at least use 1 at the beginning of the match when you're all buffed up.
Rumsey Rum Black Label - Item - World of Warcraft The most used consumable in just about every twink bracket. 15 stam, and can be bought from a vendor, so there's no excuse to not pop one of these every time you res.
Elixir of Fortitude - Item - World of Warcraft Nice to have on for a bit of extra HP. You can never have too much health in PvP.
Magic Dust - Item - World of Warcraft Typically outlawed in premades, but ok in pugs. These can be pretty expensive, and are a bitch to farm, but putting people to sleep for 10 secs is worth your trouble.
Crystal Basilisk Spine - Item - World of Warcraft Useful in mage/lock heavy games. Resisting a fear or FN can be the difference between winning and losing sometimes.
Solid Sharpening Stone - Item - World of Warcraft Should be on your mainhand at all times. MH sharpening stone, OH crip poison is the correct setup for max deeps.
Jungle Remedy - Item - World of Warcraft Great for removing another rogues crip poison, and also useful to use before a vanish if you have a serpent sting on you. These show up on the AH all the time for a few silver, so keep an eye out.
Strong Anti-Venom - Item - World of Warcraft Good luck finding the manual for this, but if you do, this is great since its on a diff cd from jungle remedy.
Greater Healing Potion - Item - World of Warcraft Healing pot should be self explanatory.
Heavy Runecloth Bandage - Item - World of Warcraft Bandages are key. This is the best kind. Dont forget, you can bandage other people as well, and gouge bandage is your friend. Also if you want to be really gay bandage your friend before you duel him so he will be on cd while you arent. =)
Free Action Potion - Item - World of Warcraft FAP's are generally looked down upon in the twinking community at any lvl. "No Faps no saps" (free action pots and goblin sapper charges) has been said so often its almost a twinking meme. Completely outlawed in premades, and frowned upon in pugs due to the fact that its non dispelable, and makes you immune to most cc's/slows. Only use if you want to get flamed on the forums.
Protection pots:
Frost Protection Potion - Item - World of Warcraft
Nature Protection Potion - Item - World of Warcraft
Fire Protection Potion - Item - World of Warcraft
Shadow Protection Potion - Item - World of Warcraft
These can be incredibly useful when used in the right circumstances. For some reason not many twinks use these, but they can be extraordinarily powerful against certain class comps.
Minor Magic Resistance Potion - Item - World of Warcraft Much like the basilisk spine, use if there are many casters.
Swiftness Potion - Item - World of Warcraft Sprint on cd? pop one of these bad boys. Generally frowned upon in premades, but ok for pugs usually.
Thistle Tea - Item - World of Warcraft This should be a part of your rotation for any high priority target, especially if theyre about to die. High priority targets are usually priests, hunters, and fc's. Priests moreso than other heals because they can dispel which is uber powerful in this bracket. Ambush, vanish, ambush, thistle tea, backstab backstab, grenade, return flag, /dance.
Faction Specific Consumables
Try to save these for special occasions, since theyre quest items with limited uses.
Horde:
Really Sticky Glue - Item - World of Warcraft Best stuff ever. Best used if their fc is about to cap for the "Save the day" achievement. Allys hate when you use this against them. Back in the day when twinks played on the PTR we would spam these all day on the PTR and then xfer over another toon once they ran out.
Faintly Glowing Skull - Item - World of Warcraft Kinda meh for a rogue since we dont have any sp to make this more effective (this is insane on glass cannon casters). However it can still be useful the ONE TIME you get to use it. Imo save it for a duel that you put a lot of gold on.
Slumber Sand - Item - World of Warcraft Like magic dust but horde only. Great for sleeping healers.
Call of the Raptor - Item - World of Warcraft Nothing too special, but its a nice buff a few times.
Alliance
Fishliver Oil - Item - World of Warcraft Super OP when you bust it out. 100 haste for 30 secs is just stupid at this lvl.
Light of Elune - Item - World of Warcraft Prob the best consumable there ever was. You only get 1 so make sure to use it when you REALLY REALLY need it. Like to win a premade against Detox or something.
Flash Bundle - Item - World of Warcraft Great to get other rogues out of stealth and provide a bit of deeps as well.
Bag of Marbles - Item - World of Warcraft Use this against hunters. Theyre your worst enemy and the bane of the 29 bracket. Everyone hates hunters, so its all good if you bust out your entire arsenal of consumables against them.
Just for fun consumables:
Fresh Holly - Item - World of Warcraft Pricey depending on the time of year, but you'll look pretty badass.
Elixir of Giant Growth - Item - World of Warcraft Makes you bigger! Fun with orc rogues since they can get pretty huge.
Savory Deviate Delight - Item - World of Warcraft I prefer the ninja for rogues, but pirates are always cool too =P
Happy Fun Rock - Item - World of Warcraft : Throw at a party member and fill their bags! Same as Heavy leather ball, voodoo skull etc.
Weighted Jack-o'-Lantern - Item - World of Warcraft Pumpkin heads! Cool because you can throw them on the opposing team as well (usually a forum buddy who plays opposite faction). Price dependent on time of year.
Pygmy Oil - Item - World of Warcraft Turn into a pygmy! Very cool consumable, you need to use a few before you get the affect, so it can get pricey, but who cares, you look badass!
Emotion Food
Tasty Cupcake - Item - World of Warcraft
Bad Clams - Item - World of Warcraft
Haunted Herring - Item - World of Warcraft
Last Weeks Mammoth - Item - World of Warcraft
They look cool because it looks like you have more buffs than you actually do. They dont really do anything, but I
like to keep at least some old mammoth on me, since eating old mammoth makes you sad rofl.
Glyphs
Major glyphs
Glyph of Crippling Poison - Item - World of Warcraft Since you have your main hand sharpening stone, this is a nice pick for your major glyph. Most rogues at 29 are using this now.
Glyph of Ambush - Item - World of Warcraft Use only if you're in a full AP set with an ambush spec. Otherwise fairly useless.
Glyph of Rupture - Item - World of Warcraft Some use this for the bleed spec. I'm not the biggest fan of the bleed spec though. It can be very good, it just doesnt suit my playstyle.
Glyph of Gouge - Item - World of Warcraft You see a lot of 39 rogues using this. Imo its kinda meh at 29, but worth a look.
Glyph of Sprint - Item - World of Warcraft Another big 39 glyph. Imo not as good as crip poison.
Minor Glyphs
Glyph of Distract - Item - World of Warcraft I prefer this over vanish, but its a tossup really. Vanish def has the slight edge in ambush specs, but you cant go wrong with either imo.
Glyph of Vanish - Item - World of Warcraft Great for ambush rogues, since you vanish quite often.
Talent Spec's
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft
This is the traditional 16/0/4 spec that is widely considered the "pro backstab spec" This is what most rogues use, and what you should probably be using. Backstabs are OP at this lvl.
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft One of the more popular bleed specs. There are other bleed specs, but I'm not a huge fan of the bleed spec, so I'm the wrong person to ask.
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft One of the traditional ambush specs. Another popular choice for ambushes is to skip ghostly strike, and initiative, and put those points into imp gouge. The reason for this is imp gouge gives you enough time to restealth, and ambush rogues are basically useless out of stealth.
This guide is still under construction. I'll be posting up spec's, glyphs, the AP gear setup, more consumables, and anything else I can think of very soon. I just wanted to throw up what I had so far since i figured this was a solid start. If you have any questions, or want me to add something, let me know, and I'll edit the guide. Hope you liked the guide, and have fun on your 29 rogue!
Edit: added some links and fixed a few things
