I have been an avid reader here for a few years but never posted. In appreciation of the excellent post and topics I thought I would contribute. I hope this helps you all.
Lets begin.
This guide is simple and makes points rather than then telling you exactly what to buy.
I won’t go into detail on why. Follow the guide or don’t. Your choice.
Rule #1 Common sense will make you gold.
When WOTLK launched I made tons of gold. I was the first to get the chopper, Mammoth etc on my server.
Rule #2 Bank Tabs
1. Have bank alts, guild tabs ready.’ The more the better.
2. Those tabs need to be stocked with bags, Netherweave bags.
3. Ores. The rarer the better. Khorium, Mithril, Gold and Silver.
Rule # 3. Profession guides tell you what you need to buy.
1. Example Blacksmithing. Look at all the mats it requires to level. Skip the bottom third, i.e. copper etc. And concentrate on the top two thirds of mats.
2. Have those mats ready for Cata launch.
Rule 4. Whoever has the most gold wins.
1. Obvious perhaps? Think about it. With the gold you can control any mats / material you want on the ah. I do it all the time. *A*
2. With the launch of Cata have at least 20k gold ready to “Invest”.
Rule 5. Listen to your gut. Not someone else’s.
People are going to tell you why this brief guide and others won’t work. Yet these same people are pissed off because they can’t get the new mounts etc on launch day. You know your server and players on it. Dont let someone who isnt there tell you what to do.
Rule 6. Think like a new player. Think like an experienced player, think like..All types of players.
This is perhaps the most important rule to grasp. I will give some examples and tie in the other rules with it.
Within the first day of launch all players will be playing all types of toons. Either there 80s or starting the new goblin or worgen.
The mats in your bank will cater to them. They want to be server first. They have nothing but that on their mind. Now the argument will come in “They will farm the mats for themselves.” First, refer to rule 5. Then to Rule #1.
Yes some will be able to farm mats for themselves. But if they are deadset on being server first ( rule 6) they wont be farming. We don’t care trying to sell to others. We want the server first guys . Ignore the rest!
Also. Remember trying to farm ore in TBC? The areas are going be flooded with people trying to farm their own mats. They will get frustrated and run to the AH for mats. (Rule 2).
Continuing on with rule 6, that is other type of players and thinking like them. Inflate the hell out of prices. When WOTLK launched, for the first 4 days I sold Saronite Ore for 750 gold a stack. Then the following week after that I sold them at 400-450.
Watch for noobs and under cutters. Buy them out.
The last type of players I will discuss is the “I want my character to know everything toon”. Ever had a tailor or blacksmith and got excited and wanted to know every single damn pattern out there? You’re not the only one. I still make gold to this day buy buying old school patterns on the auction house, boosting them up 5 or 6 times their value and waiting. An overexcited player will come in and buy it, not using rational thinking to realize he is overpaying. This can be done now and used throughout cata.
I hope this guide helps you guys and gals.

*A* I recently came back to wow after a 6 month break from the game. In approximately 9 hours of ah buying and reselling I made 16k gold. A perfect example is runecloth. I buy it during the week at approx 6 gold a stack. Come Friday evening I relist it at 15-18 a stack. I control it all weekend until about 8pm Sunday. This is just one example.
