I made this guide on the Wow forums first
What are rares?
Rares are rare mobs (mobiles) that spawn or appear rarely. Normal mobs re-spawn after a few minutes or even seconds. Rare mobs have a Silver Dragon on their portrait. There are elite and non-elite rares.
Why hunt rares?
1. Achievements. With the new Achievement system, there are four exploration achievements for killing a rare, two for killing ALL the rares. Also, with all the cloth you will get, the ‘stocking up’ achievement will be done.
2. The thrill of the hunt. When that rare pops up on your screen your heart starts beating and the excitement rises. I like hunting things, but without the blood.
3. It’s a challenge. It’s not something you can just decide to do and do. It takes patience, planning and practice.
4. Money. Each rare mob drops a Bind on Equip blue item that usually sells well in the Auction house. Northrend rares also drop a satchel that contains a large amount of gold (17-22g) and cloth (20 frostweave). Chances are your profession is a farming one, and you can collect ore, herbs or gas nodes along the way.
5. Entertainment. The rares, once you find them, sometimes put you on a merry chase through the zone while you try to find a safe spot to land and kill them, all before anyone else does. Also, the items they drop are usually comical in nature, like ‘The Seat Cushion of the Thief’ or when you kill the one-eyed beholder, he will give you a ‘Beholder’s glass eye’ which makes one of your eyes glow pink when equipped.
6. And last but not least, bragging rights. I have yet to not get a stunned ‘Wow….’ When I link my completed achievement.
How do I get started?
Don’t just run around randomly clicking on everything, like I did at first. To get started, pick a zone you frequent and visit a few spawn points.

Eventually you will have every location of every rare in these lists memorized, but at the start, just start small.

If you need to look up a specific mob for more accurate info or pictures, I have found that Thottbot is more accurate for BC, and Wowhead is more accurate for WotLK

2. Rare Mob Hunting Guide FAQ 04/02/2009 11:26:46 AM PDT
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When is the best time to search?
A: Eleven in the morning has been the most profitable for me. I find more rares and sometimes two in a row. Early early morning (4am) has been okay. I have never found anything after 3pm when the kiddies get out of school.
Q: Are some rares rarer than others?
A: Yes. The rares near towns, roads, daily quests, and flight paths are harder to find as they are killed sooner. Sholozar basin is almost impossible to find any rares in. The hardest rares to find are ones that are desired for special reasons like Loque’nahak or the time-lost proto drake in stormpeak. The time-lost drake supposedly is some seventeen times less likely to spawn than Vyragosa.
Q: Is there any pattern or order? Ie. After killing Putridus, will Hildana appear next?
A: No, not that I can tell.
Q: Are there always three rares per zone?
A: Yes, either three or none. Only dungeons have one.
Q: How many spawn points are there?
A: One, Three, Five, or Seven per mob. Three if the Mob patrols in a set path – five if the mob is stationary or ‘meandering’. For the seven-location spawns, for whatever reason, two of those points are usually right next to another one for so all practical purposes can be considered five points. Putridus and Voidhunter Yar are the only mobs I know of with a single spawn location.
Q: Can you see them from taxis?
A: Yes, but due to lag you can’t rely on this. The bigger the mob, the more likely you can. Putridius can be targeted from a zone away.
Q: Does killing things affect rare respawns?
A: No, not that I have noticed.
Q: Don’t I need tracking?
A: The only tracking I use now is humanoid – not to track the rares, but to track other people camping a rare. It’s not always easy to notice that guy on a flying carpet high up above the spawn point.
A: Anything else?
Q: The last rares you cannot find are the worst. Don’t expect to find them like you did the others. It’s just luck at this point. Logoff at their spawn points, and hope to get lucky when you log in. Fulgorge cannot be targeted by the macro as he travels underground. Corpses despawn in one minute. When the Wow developers did the BC rares, they had a perverse sense of humor and put every spawn location seemingly as far away as possible from each other.
Respawn Times
Everyone asks ‘when is the respawn time??’ so I thought I’d take extra time to discuss this. Long answer short, No one knows for sure, but we can narrow it down. I’ve seen five different theories.
1. It’s random.
2. It’s at server starts.
3. It’s X hours after you kill it.
4. It’s X hours after the last one spawned.
5. It’s at set times of day.
I believe it’s a couple of these.
In general, I believe the respawn time is around 12-8 hours after the last one was killed. Please note I say ‘in general’. There are exceptions. The smallest amount of time between kills for me has been eight and a half hours. Other people have reported seeing respawns at exactly twelve hours, so six hours is also a reasonable time. This is all speculation but I’m sticking with eight hours.
They do NOT appear at server start.
I have also had two rares appear at once - vyragosa and dirkee. I foolishly went after vyra at half health from dirkee and died![]()
There is a curious phenomena that I have encountered, and others have reported the same thing. After days and days of searching a zone and never finding a single rare, one day you come across two, sometimes three, in a row! It’s happened to me several times.
Taking all these facts into account, rares spawn every X hours, again, 8-12.
They do not necessarily share the same spawn 'group'.
If they do not share the spawn they each run on separate timers. Rarer ones like Loque'nathak seem to appear every ~12 hours, less rare ones like crystalbark are every ~8. There may be a few with ~4 hour timers.
The last note I have about spawn times is I believe the server only does all these calculations for rares every fifteen minutes, eg. 02:00 or 09:45. This is because there are three times a rare has popped under my nose (Goretooth, icehorn, and king ping) and all were exactly on the hour or half hour. More exact data can be found in thotbot’s Loque’nathal comments, easily the most diligently camped mob with many exact times and locations. Most kill times are a few minutes after the xx:15 minute mark.
If you feel like using a third party program then you can download one here: TLPDbot, ventrilo302.zip @ RapidShare
this program can be extracted to any folder...
You can change the mod to say /tar (the rare you are hunting)
