With the advent of 3.0.2, Retribution Paladins have become absolute killing machines. Ret has joined the ranks of druids and holy paladins in the Onyxia soloing club.
WHAT YOU NEED:
-70 Retribution Paladin with T4+ gear (You can try this in blues, but I haven't tried it).
-Patience (This fight can take in excess of 30 minutes solo)
WHAT YOU DON'T NEED:
-Fire resistance gear (In my experience, FR gear only gimps yourself in exchange for mediocre protection from fire. FR aura is sufficient.
-Consumables (You might need them if you're doing this in blues, but like I said, T4 is all you need. You may wish to bring a couple extra healing potions just in case you lose mind of your health for some reason and can't get a heal off.)
-Attunement (3.0.2 removed the need for the Drakefire Amulet to enter).
The Ideal Talent Spec:
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft
Fanaticism, Art of War, and Sheath of Light are the three most important talents in this build. More judgement crits means more flashes of light, and Sheath of Light means bigger flashes of light.
Why solo Onyxia?
Simply put, Onyxia is a huge cash cow. She drops an average of 130-140 in PURE gold. In addition, she drops:
-Two T2 headpieces
-One random BoP epic specific to herself
-Her head
-One to two Onyxia Hide Backpacks (18 slotters)
-2-3 generic BoE blues 48-55ish in required level. Sometimes includes Codices and other class skill books.
GENERAL TIPS:
Use Seal/Judgement of Light. All the time. This is what will keep you alive.
Use Art of War every time it's up.
Onyxian Warders
To be honest, I thought these guys were harder than Onyxia herself. Don't bother cleansing the flame resistance debuff they put on you, you could be doing better things with the GCD. Be sure not to let yourself dip below 50% HP or so, or blast wave might get you. Use Art of War every time it's up.
Onyxia, Phase 1
Phase 1 is all about RNG. Do a normal Judge/Divine Storm/Crusader Strike rotation, where Art of War takes priority and Judgement takes second priority. Of course, keep FR aura on. That will help mitigate Flame Breath damage a lot.
Onyxia, Phase 2
Phase 2 is, in my opinion, the easiest part of the whole thing once you get used to deep breaths. If you haven't already, make sure you turn on enemy casting bars. Seeing her "Breath" can save you if you didn't pay attention to the emotes.
During this phase, Onyxia will cast fireballs at you with the occasional deep breath, as well as summoning whelps from her clutch. The first wave of whelps will be the biggest. Once Onyxia stops in her first spot, lay down a Consecration and once about half the whelps are to you start casting Holy Light. Continue judging and consecrating and healing until all the whelps are down. You may wish to use bubble the first few times to get used to this. From here, it's smooth sailing. Follow Onyxia as she flies about her room and hit her as you normally would.
Onyxia, Phase 3
Phase 3 is like Phase 1, only with the addition of fear. Nothing tricky here, just make sure you keep yourself topped off. Back to back fear/buffet/breath can kill you.
And bam, she's down! Enjoy your free gold.
