[Guide] Netherwing / Dragonmaw Races inc. Skyshatter

Hi there all, long time leecher first time contributer. I have thoroughly searched and in my efforts have not come across a similar guide here, and I figured as this was something that I struggled with myself (well, the Skyshatter one mainly), I figured I would share my wisdom. If a repost, will most certainly be in a different format as this is presented in my own form, and if you do insist that it's a repost, I want a link!

I don't take credit for the videos but I do take credit for the arrangement and the write up.

    Introduction

To give a brief overview of the quests, essentially the Dragonmaw Race quests are a series of, funnily enough, racing quests whereby you are challenged to race around Netherwing Ledge on your flying mount, each one getting progressively more challenging than the previous.

These quests become available only at Honored with the Netherwing faction.

The chain goes a little something like this.

    • 1. Dragonmaw Race: The Ballad of Oldie McOld (+350 Netherwing Reputation)
    • 2. Dragonmaw Race: Trope the Filth-Belcher (+350 Netherwing Reputation)
    • 3. Dragonmaw Race: Corlok the Vet (+500 Netherwing Reputation)
    • 4. Dragonmaw Race: Wing Commander Ichman (+500 Netherwing Reputation)
    • 5. Dragonmaw Race: Wing Commander Mulverick (+500 Netherwing Reputation)
    • 6. Dragonmaw Race: Captain Skyshatter (+1000 Netherwing Reputation)

Of course the reputation gains shown is non-human so whack on the 10% if applicable.

    A few pointers...

    • Something I must stress - DO THE RACES NAKED! - There is no point wasting repair bills if you fall to your doom, so get nekkid and let it all hang free
    • Don't forget to equip your Riding Crop if you have one (it's highly recommended for the later races but chances are you probably already own one by this stage). By now from doing the Netherwing Dailies to reach Honored, you must have a spare bit of cash to shell out for one of these
    • Rendering the above item useless as unfortunately it doesn't stack, being a Pally / bringing a Pally along can help as the Crusader Aura would be a godsend.
    • Bad latency will cause problems. If for whatever reason there's server lag or your connection is playing up, give it a miss and come back when your latency is green, otherwise you'll end up angry.
    • Hide your UI using Alt+Z to see as much as possible of what's going on.
    • Stick on DND as you won't want any interruptions, you certainly won't be whispering people back mid flight
    • If you're going down, utilise Slow Fall as a mage to minimize downtime, or if you're an Engineer of skill 225+ try Parachute Cloak which should also help minimize downtime.
    • Might sound obvious, but keep the person you are racing targetted at all times. It helps to find them if you momentarily lose them. Get in a party and Raid Mark them! Regardless of what hills your opponent flies behind you'll be able to see exactly where they are.
    • Don't forget to utilize Noggenfogger Elixir because the smaller you are, the harder you are to hit. This method is quite successful from what I've heard. If you're a Gnomish Engineer with a high enough skill you'll have Gnomish World Enlarger to benefit you as well.
    • Zoom out more! In my opinion with the big Netherdrake on the screen, the view is too obstructed. Some may disagree, but to give you the option, you can extend the Zoom Out further than what you can in the interface options by typing the command /script SetCVar("cameraDistanceMax", 25) into the chat log.

Away we go with the guide then!

    1. Dragonmaw Race: The Ballad of Oldie McOld

    <No Video>

Not included a video for this one as it's relatively straightforward. That, and I couldn't find one. I guess in fairness if you were to really, really struggle on this one, it might well be best to give up on the chain altogether because the later races would have you in tears! Basically though this race is a pushover, he'll be throwing pumpkins at you, just simply dodge side to side. Having the camera zoomed out further as mentioned above will help you to see the pumpkins he'll be lobbing.

    2. Dragonmaw Race: Trope the Filth-Belcher

    <No Video>

Unfortunately was unable to find a video for this one either but shouldn't take too many attempts and is certainly doable on the first - I find an excellent tactic here is to stay underneath him if you can, as the AoE bombs he chucks out go directly behind him. That, or keeping your distance a fair bit to enable you to manouvere in time.

    3. Dragonmaw Race: Corlok the Vet

    [YT]kpT8p8gh43Q[/YT]

Great tip here is to just stay underneath him or above. This chap occasionally shoots out skulls and if you're at his level, close and right behind him, chances are you'll get shot down. The video should explain it all.

    4. Dragonmaw Race: Wing Commander Ichman

    [YT]ydlbYFSOcWw[/YT]

Interesting fact... "Ichman" and the next racer "Mulverick" are references to the characters of the move Top Gun "Iceman" and "Maverick". Anyways, main point here, stay above, stay above and stay above! It's alot easier to dodge the fireballs if you do so. Watch out for the time he'll double back on himself, it can take you by suprise so watch the video and try and learn the route as best you can.

    5. Dragonmaw Race: Wing Commander Mulverick

    [YT]jKZcDKaIe3A[/YT]

This is a tough one and some people find it harder than Skyshatter. I found Skyshatter to be pure evil and he almost brought me to tears, but this one despite being tough wasn't as hard as Skyshatter in my opinion, but of course we're all different. Basically with this one the lightening bolts will track you which makes it a tough cookie to not get shot down. Again, being above him and being quick and nimble with the strafe keys is the key to success. I have since heard about another tactic, which involves bring a team of a few others for help. Basically, if you're in a group, the lightening bolts will track other members of your party as well as you, meaning there are less bolts for you to dodge. This chap moves extremely erratically at times and the best thing I can suggest here if you're really struggling is to watch the video and learning the flight path turn for turn.

    6. Dragonmaw Race: Captain Skyshatter

    [YT]vnAsBOEt7BY[/YT]

The absolute key to success here, in my opinion, is to watch the video and learn the exact route. There are so many sharp turns and double backs and effectively he's going faster than you, so you're going to need to know the route to take advantage of any possible corners that you are able to cut, and stay ever so slightly ahead of him wherever possible. There are times that he will almost double back but continue straight, which confused the crap out of me the first few attempts. This chap took me about 20 or so times but managed to do it within 1 or 2 attempts after watching this video. I'm really not sure if there's any other way to do it other than to learn the route basically. Raid Marking him is especially effective here due to how easy it can be to lose him as he's so quick.

Well I hope this guide has been helpful to you, looking forward to the feedback, and of course if there is anything I've missed out that you'd like to add, please do so!

    Thanks for reading!
