Pet battle - rare quality command/addon - question

Is there any way to see if a pet is rare/uncommon etc before engaging?

Nope, but if you're losing the battle you can escape out of it and battle the same set-up again by clicking the same critter.

uhh.. .there are addons for that, it looks at the pet's heath, speed, power and type to figure out the rarity.

Edit: so what I usually do is engage and leave the battle if it isn't rare, and hit the critter with an instant cast to force an (eventual) respawn
