"Acclaimed director Duncan Jones has expressed excitement that the forthcoming World of Warcraft movie could be the first videogame-based film to be a truly excellent cinematic experience.

The Moon filmmaker, who is the son of rock legend David Bowie, told NME that he is "hugely jealous" of the opportunity presented to World of Warcraft director Sam Raimi, as Jones is a big fan of gaming.

He stated that he believes that Raimi - best known for making the Spider-Man and Evil Dead movies - is on the right track with his approach to adapting Blizzard's hugely popular franchise.

"It's not worrying about how the game plays, it's about creating the world of the game and investing the audience in that world," said Jones.

Expectations are likely to be high for the movie version of gaming phenomenon World of Warcraft, which is the most popular MMORPG in the world.

The continued enthusiasm for the series was underlined by last month's launch of the expansion pack World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, which has become the fastest-selling PC title ever released."
