Is buying gold still safe?

I heard about people getting banned for buying gold because of the letters they send you, then i have heard about people getting away with it because they recieved it in a trade (but i don't know any websites that offer that, confirmed of not being scam sites) but can a GM really ban you for buying gold? What if you just buy some gold, send it to a random person will he get banned because the GMs will think he purchased it? Do GMs have proof you bought it? With all these step ups in security that have been going on against powerleveling and all i'm really curious if you can still buy gold. If you even do get caught what is the penalty?

well, i used to think that GMs put filters in the in-game mail system i.e if there was a mail sent for over 500g a GM would look into it etc..

but my friends buy gold regularly and nothin has happened to them so i dunno...

I suggest you dont buy gold because I bought gold from MMOInn and a week later my level 60 got hacked and now I am trying to restore my 500 gold...

This is how I think they do it: Blizzard got an alert system if any gold traded from a chinese, korean IP (might be other countries too) Then they look into the character/account which have the chinese IP, then they see where he traded it away, well to a level 1 alt which are then sending the gold to you and if they look at the logs of the farmer, they will see that he have been at the very same spot over a longer time, and dont got pretty good gear, then they see that the level 1 they traded it to traded it away for nothing at all (free gold) then your pretty busted.
