Private servers - secure?

Okay, I'm just asking is it possible to join/create private servers safely so you don't brake your entire WoW. I'm playing on live servers, but when I installed those hackpatches+stuff in guides, maybe I did something wrong, because live and privateservers didn't work.

But is it possible to make wow so I can join private / live without having to re-install the game every time? I tried Wmvare workstation, but there only comes a wow error on startup.

install 2 wows on your comp put the private sever stuff in 1 and reg stuff in other folder. should work not sure though
