    Old-world drops from New-world lockboxes

    Hi All,

I discovered this exploit while having boxes opened on my bank alt. I had sent several eternium lockboxes that dropped while grinding in Outlands to my level 1 bank alt. The bank alt had the boxes opened and inside them contained high-level old-world drop items. These level 57-60 old-world drop items are perfect for DEing into Greater Eternal Essences and Illusion Dust. For those trying to skill enchanting to BC levels, you will know the great difficulty in going from 250 to 300. When I have Eternium lockboxes opened on my main, they contain similar level new-world drops, that only DE into Arcane Dust and Lesser Planar Essences. This is a great source for those high-level old world enchanting supplies that are in such great demand.

    Enjoy,

    lo-fi ;o)

Edit: It appears this is just a bug, and that all Eternium lockboxes contain old-world drops regardless of who opens them or where they are opened. It's still a nice "tip" for getting Greater Eternals and Illusion Dust, but not an "exploit". I noticed in a previous patch that Eternium lockboxes taht dropped in Outlands contained New-world drops, and then noticed the above observation recently and assumed it was the method and a not a change on blizz's part, my mistake.

Perhaps it detects if you're in Outland or not to decide the contents, since some people (lol?) don't have the expansion?

or the boxes just have bad loot. This is being corrected in 2.2. This is not an exploit

it could bad be bad loot, the fact that your in another city, or the fact that it was a lvl 1 who had them opened

Level 1 opening Eternuim Lockbox? No. If I recall correctly Rogues need like 230-ish lockpick skill to open those. No level 1 is going to open them.

Santamaycry is 100% correct. This is a glaringly bad error on Blizz's side, and will be fixed. When you loot any lockbox it's contents are already generated. Where you open it will not change that.

In fact, here is some little known data about loot in general.
It is all generated at the time the Mob is spawned.

So, for example, a Mob in SM spawns with a lockbox, 2 silk cloth, and 11 silver... and the contents of the lockbox are already determined when that Mob is spawned... lets say it holds a green bracer of the bear... you kill the Mob, take the lockbox, give it to a friend that sends it to an alt that hands it to a rogue and logs out... and 11 days later the rogue opens that lockbox...

Guess what? The rogue gets... (Drumroll here) a green bracer of the bear.
I run 47 AddOns. My UI has an MP3 player. Unbuffed I am 10k hp/10k mana, 12k armor. I can wear shadow gear and destroy any 3 level 70 shadowpriests. At once. I AM a badass. And anything with C cups or better and pretty eyes will OWN me.

if someone opens them for you and if you then open the boxes with a lvl 1 ? an open box can everyone open

Or, maybe Eternium lockboxes aren't new, they've always been out. And they aren't going to add new loot tables to things that dropped Pre-TBC. The new ones in TBC or Khorium or something.

Then the contents would still have been decided at the time the Mob carrying it spawned... making the level of the guy opening it still not matter a lick.
