I assume its based off item level so I took all my gear off and joined lfd and got paired with a bunch of scrubs in greens for H oculus

I am currently out dpsing Johnnydeepps the UD rogue while in bear form :|

If you take your gear OFF it's a different calculation. Put on crappy gear.

Are you sure this is right? I queued, got FoS HC, 40k unbuffed warrior, 30k mana unbuffed pala, with a decent rogue and hunter... It definitely wasn't unbalanced. My HoL + HoS random have also been above average in gear.

Also, if you have good gear (like your 40k unbuffed warrior), you will have a higher chance of getting a harder heroic (like the new icecrown ones). Worse gear gives you easier heroics, such as violet hold or utgarde keep.

Im thinking this is just completely random / coincidental for you Bonutdot since even after joining with lvl 200 gear I had badly geared players in group, while when just staying in my high level gear I will get other good geared people along with the badly geared person here and there.

And as for getting harder instances with good gear?
I have pretty much the best gear you can get right now and only see the new 3 heroics as often as I see the old ones.

Yea, I dunno about this either. I'm a 2650 gearscore tankadin (40k selfbuffed) and I've only gotten awesome groups. I'm talkin at least one dps over 5k each time. Never had a wipe with LFD yet and I've probably used it 15-20 times so far...

Blizzard's automatic gear matching system will automatically pair poorly geared players with higher geared players in order to balance things out.

However, this only checks what gear you are wearing, not what you have in your bags! Once you're in the group, you're free to switch gear/spec as much as you'd like.

What does this mean for us? This means that if you queue up in your crappy blue DPS offspec gear when you're supposed to be tanking, you'll get paired with very well geared dps and healers. Or if you queue up in your terrible tanking gear when you're supposed to be dps'ing, you'll get matched up with an awesome tank.

Queue up in your bad gear, and you'll get good partners. Then switch to your good gear, and you have a full group of awesomeness.

EDIT: Make sure you have at least one piece of epic gear on. This will make sure that the game considers you eligible for heroics.

What would happen if every good geared person started doing this????

This is not just from my personal experience, this is from dozens of separate people's recounting and comparing. Using this method, swapping to junk gear NEVER queue'd for the icecrown heroics. When 15 people queue up 12 times like this and never get icecrown heroics, that seems like a pattern to me.

I have been chain running random heroics since it came out on patch day and I have seen people in all ranges of gear, there seems to be no patern.

Never saw a tank with less than 40k hp nor a dps with only green/blue gears.
I guess it's really random :/

you dont see people in green items because people using green items are really RARE compared to people using epics ...
just remember how long your char used to wear green stuff at level 80
