Stuck in combat bug from smartAI script

Wonder what I can do to fix this. I have a quest that requires a kill credit from 4 npcs. I set scripts up so that the player clicks the gossip option and the npc turns hostile, feigns death and gives the kill credit. Everything works except the player is stuck in combat for as long as I have checked afterwards. I even tried a force despawn on the npc.
