Getting back into it: 5.4 supported realms?

So it's been a while since I've ran a private server, and I've forgotten most of what I knew from before. Right now I'm running the updated 5.4, and I'm wondering if I can use a server from a previous patch, and if that will work. Last that I remember, it didn't.

What do you mean by previous patch? Yes, you can just edit your realmlist file if it's the same expansion. However, if it's a different expansion (such as wotlk), you'll need to download that client.

However, I don't think you can even access the realmlist file anymore (pretty sure they removed it in a previous patch), so I don't know how to change it now.

There is some in development as skyfire currently has a branch that is being updated to 5.4.1.
