    Because alot of the private servers on wow, got the 3.3.5 patch.

    Everything works in 3.3.5a. It's a easy patch to get to. If you go down patches, less people have those clients and they are harder to obtain. If you go up, support is limited and functionality reduced.

    It was the last patch before cataclysm.
    A lot of devs either didn't want to move on until 3.3.5a.
    DB devs just about had an aneurism when they realized they'd have to redo all of the 1-60 content.
    From what I've heard, reversing the 4.x.x client also wasn't fun at all for reverse engineers.

    The two surviving emulators; MaNGOS and TrinityCore have started work on 4.3.3 though, their progress is going pretty steadily and they should be done soon (tm).
