Can someone give me a n00b rundown of basic emu terms?

I'm pretty much new with setting up my own server. I just wanted some better understanding of some of the terms being thrown around. For instance 'ascent', 'arcemu', 'mangos', 'trinity', 'ncdb', 'repack', and 'svn'.

Even if someone could guide me to a post where these questions are answered, it would be much appreciated.

Ascent - A emulater which is almost dead now.
ArcEmu - A emulater, generally all the drama you hear about comes from here, but it is the most user friendly emulater. They only support 3.0.9.
Aspire - ArcEmu and Aspire both came from Ascent, this emulater took a different path from ArcEmu and now have a working 3.1.x. A lot of people mod this core to there own needs.
Mangos - The most blizzlike emulater out there, not good for begginers but a very mature team that do well.
    Trinity - Similer to Mangos.
Ncdb - A database (used to be the best) which has now stopped developing.
Repack - When somone compiles a server and database etc to make something somone can download and use in minutes.
Svn - What emulaters use to host there project on, allows devs to easily edit it then you can hit "svn update" to download there updates.
Emulater - What runs the WoW private server
Core - The main parts of running a server, not the database and scripts.

    Hope that helps a bit!

Yes. First, you should probably choose a core. I recommend MaNGOS at the moment, it usually is up-to-date with the latest patch, and is very feature heavy. MaNGOS also is home to the most Blizzlike database. I recommend you learn how to compile MaNGOS (Go to MaNGOS: the open source MMORPG server - Powered by vBulletin). This will help you be able to keep your "core" up-to-date with the latest fixes and support. Compling basically takes all the files in the "core" that you have downloaded with an "SVN client" and puts them into a single or multiple .exe files.

Is it similar to setting up arcemu? i remember messing around with arcemu for a bit. I would start the sql server and then use navicat to naviagate through the database. will i being doing the samething with mangos?
