Compiling a Database

Is it possible to gather and compile information for my OWN Database?

Ive been using repacks since forever and wondered how people got all the information for mobs and such. I've googled and googled but found no guides that were competant, useful, or just do want i want

i don't need a core (well i do but that's easy to find), just a way to gather the information from the MPQ's (im guessing thats how you do it, is there any other way?) from my own WoW installation.
