How much bandwith does it take?

so ive figured out that you pretty much need 1000mb/s to have a big populated server but i want to know if theres any way to increase the number of players i can hold on a 1mb upload speed line and how many players a 1mb line can even hold.

thanks and +rep to useful help

On a 100kbps upload, a lot of things can effect it. How much RAM does the Computer hosting the server have? Is Compression in the config enabled so the server takes more load rather than your bandwidth. How busy is your network? Are there loads of computers using the net at the same time?

    Just a few suggestions

hmm.. thx for all the replies.. heres a couple specifics and ive pretty much posted all this a while ago and i ended up buying a new computer because of it but still get lag.. anyways

    4gb ram
    quad core 2.4
    windows xp

    3mb download
    1mb upload speed

and i do have a couple brothers using the internet all the time

the most ive had on my server is like 15 players before it starts to lag but all those times ive also been playing wow on the server at the same time..and i really wouldnt think it would affect it that much but im probably wrong so any help is useful

Speedtest is not the best way to test your internet speed. Open your router page. Either 192.168.1.254, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 it'll be something like that. Im sure you probably know it.

Find Broadband Connection information and it should show what up & down speeds your router is getting.

With that computer and if you have good internet speeds you could host up to 100+ players. 4Gb of RAM is great, Quad Core also great, just try and get an accurate speed reading.

The Quality of your router can also affect your speeds. Are you using ADSL or ADSL2+ or something else?
