    I'm kinda scared :S

I was on my private server and tried to get my friend to connect.
He got in on the server and got to character screen.
He then tells me that blizz is trying to connect to his internet. I quickly closed MangOS and realmd and WoW.exe.
Is my server detected? Can they IP-bann me and also sue me for having the server?

I'm just a little to confused

lol and if they try to break in your computer you can sue them !!
    dont be affraid lol...
There are thousands of private servers... if they had to sue them all (+ new servers created daily) then they would have to sue people forever

    Re: I'm kinda scared :S

They CAN check your WoW folder on your computer for "malicious" content :\ Other than that I can sue them for. I also heard about some private servers getting put down by blizz and the creator sued...

Private Servers are not illegal untill you make money of having them.

eerm wrong again m8 read the blizzard rules again.. (dam i had to post this like a million times already)

It is not allowed to have a public private server!
here is a part that will help make my reply clear:

    Code:
    1. Limitations on Your Use of the Service.
    2. Only Blizzard or its licensees have the right to host the Game. You may not host or provide matchmaking services for the Game, or intercept, emulate or redirect the proprietary communication protocols used by Blizzard in connection with the Program, regardless of the method used to do so. Such prohibited methods may include, but are not limited to, protocol emulation, reverse engineering, modifying the Program, adding unauthorized components to the Program, or using a packet sniffer while the Program is running.
    3. You agree that you will not (i) modify or cause to be modified any files that are a part of the Program or the Service; (ii) create or use cheats, bots, "mods", and/or hacks, or any other third-party software designed to modify the World of Warcraft experience; or (iii) use any third-party software that intercepts, "mines", or otherwise collects information from or through the Program or the Service. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may update the Program with authorized patches and updates distributed by Blizzard, and Blizzard may, at its sole and absolute discretion, allow the use of certain third party user interfaces.
    4. You may not disrupt or assist in the disruption of (i) any computer used to support the Service (each a "Server"); or (ii) any other player's Game experience. ANY ATTEMPT BY YOU TO DISRUPT THE SERVICE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM MAY BE A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. You agree that you will not violate any applicable law or regulation in connection with your use of the Program or the Service.
    5. Blizzard reserves the exclusive right to create derivative works based on the Program. You may not create derivative works based on the Program without Blizzard’s prior written consent.

Correct, countries without copy right laws are not effected by this. However, in the US and most of Europe, these laws are in effect and hosting a server IS illegal.

    Re: I'm kinda scared :S

Which country do you live in? I don't know what Azn means -.- (though i see it all the time in games heh).

    Is Azn = Azerbajande? lol
Cause you would have to check the laws in your country, but mainly IF you do NOT get ANY money from hosting a wowemu NOT EVEN a donation!

Then you should be free, fack the Blizzard EULA lol, and there's like atleast 25'000 Emu's out there so finding exactly yours would eh, be hard to.

I've only seen Emu's with like 900-5'000 players getting busted by FBI (they had a lot of donations yes).

Dalamar --> Yes it's not legal in a lot of countries but that doesn't mean you will get jailed first time you start it up.

Obviously, I was just clearing up some confusion in this thread.

Like you said, the only servers that Blizzard have punished in the past have been large servers that have either been charging a fee or collecting a lot of money in donations.

There is a way around this if you live in a country that allows EULA agreements. You can create an EULA agreement as the main page of your website and not allow anyone from Blizzard to access your site or that the contents of your site to be used against you in any legal matters.

Exactly! Good point Dalamar, same with register rules on forums like mine :P
(there's register rules on all forums and some are updated so they say f.ex. no one from Bl!zz can register etc.)

    Re: I'm kinda scared :S

I hope this makes everyone have more safe feelings. I had a friend who got caught and they said to shut it down or it would be dealt with the law. He shut it down they said thank you for your cooperation and he set it up AGAIN and they busted him again and said the same thing... They never take action because with all the money they got. If they bust you for having a private server you can sue them and they can sue you because going through someones IP is illegal even if it is to see if your doing something illegal. Later!

    Re: I'm kinda scared :S

I've been creating Private Servers for awhile now and have never gotten an account banned or even suspended. And anyway the worse thing Blizz can do is ban your account, they cant charge you or anything unless you use a piece of their coding or downloaded the game illegaly.
