well, i'm noob too but will try to help since I'm slowly learning. :]
if you've got a good package, your account and world db will be splitted in two databases. so you can just update the world one without loosing your account/char settings. or, if you want to keep your db personalization and adapt them to the new db (that usually is better than previous one) just dump the records of your stuff (not whole table!) and import them in new one. it's not a quick operation but gives the best results. it's a good thing to keep track of your changes so you know the ID to backup.

if you want to upgrade the emulator with a new version you simply put new one in a new dir, copy the maps, dbc, vmaps folders from old one, then update the DB connections and server limits in the configuration file of new one (theorically you could copy config files from old emu but between version something may be changed). then drop old emu and put all new files in that folder.

least, if you want to import the fun stuff of a repack in your db it's a complicated thing because it means merging two databases. best thing is to contact the repack author so he can help you locating the records you need. or else, with lot of patience, you can start analyzing the new db tables and import only the stuff you need/like.

    hope it helped. :]

in the config files of the new repack just define the database as your old one... and done
Note: if the core is updated it could be that your DB needs SQL updates
