Just heard of this, wanted to share to those who haven't heard...
OpenAscent
Hopefully this goes well...
Quote from their site, written by Trelorn:
Sounds good.OpenAscent is an attempt by myself to save Ascent properly, in the spirit of open source development.
Although many of the original developers have left (Burlex, namely), OpenAscent will be a community-driven port of Ascent. Unlike other projects with similar goals, OpenAscent has my official blessing as a former member of the Ascent developer team (and Burlex's ok). In addition, OpenAscent actually has someone who knows fluent C++ in charge.
How will OpenAscent differ from Ascent? Unlike Ascent, OpenAscent will have no "project leader." I will simply be organizing things and committing a few bug fixes. From there, the community must develop it's emulator. OpenAscent has none of the benefits of the private version of Ascent lead by Burlex, Summit.
OpenAscent will also be utilizing a different license than Ascent, since the goals of the Affero license were not fully met. Instead, we will be using the Creative Commons Non-commercial and no-derivative license. What this means is that you cannot take any of the OpenAscent work and port it to your own emulator, say, vbWoW. It also means you cannot use our software to run a business. It does not, however, forbid accepting donations for running the software. A full version of the license is available here.
With that said, enjoy.
