Why Doesn't Ascent Charge for Ascent?

You guys probably hate to dish out $$ for stuff , but think what it would be like if we had t pay let's say 30$ for a 1 year ascent licenser per person.

    - Burlex would be payed and would continue with the emulator way longer
    - It would definitely weed out the leechers
    - No more cheap servers run by 12 year olds
    - No more flaming by noob Hamachi based servers

Many servers make quite a bit of money , 30$ isn't much for a server if they are already paying 15$ on xtremetop100.com for some advertising space. Just 10 servers and it's already 300$ for burlex.

Go ahead and flame , but the better servers I think will like this. I also think Burlex would work harder if he would be making much more money apart from his job at wowscape, so no more REALLY unstable trunks.

Burlex doesn't own wowscape , he is a dev for them. Donation on ascentemu.com are VERY VERY LOW( sectorseven told me , he has burlex on msn). I am sure he makes good money as a dev for wowscape, but he isn't getting anything out of ascent. I'm scared he will one day ONLY develop for wowscape. They are doing this right now to get a big lead on top of toxic wow and it's working , you think that if you owned the #1 wow server and had the best emu dev on your side that you wouldn't even think of staying #1 forever?

I wouldn't worry about blizz going after burlex , already the emulator is supposed to be illegal and many servers make big profits , so I wouldn't see why it would be different for him.

if he charged for ascent it wouldn't be open source anymore and blizzard would have an ironclad reason to bring him to court.

I wouldn't see a problem. Ascent , just like Mangos I think , is classified as a learning project , Burlex would be charging people to view this learning project.

I think its a good idea, it eliminates noob servers, which, I think, is Burlexs' goal with holding patch 2.4

I was thinking about this earlier today.

If Burlex were to have a system set up where servers/admins could log into a site, donate and get access to the releases on a pay-per-patch basis it could weed out a lot of servers, but at the same time maintain Burlex with funding that would initiate good solid work. Example, for a 2.3.0 release 10$, for a 2.3.3 $15, for a new patch like 2.4.0 it could cost like $30 for the first month, and decrease from there. Major work obviously like 3.0 would require more effort on his part, and so could require a larger donation amount. He could host the 1.0.0-2.2.3 for free, so there would still be noob servers.

I am head admin on a server, I am 13 the owner is 12, we keep the server private and get our friends to join, and their friends etc, it's awesome to have our own server, we don't think our server is awesome but we wouldn't be able to afford ANYTHING. Besides Blizzard would take him to court for a violation of the ToU.

Ascent = open source... meaning anyone can develop stuff for it and it can get applied to the real thing... If burlex would ask money for it people would just use mangos or kobold or something... and he would have to pay his development team aswell and eventually he wouldn't win any money from it... now he can...how?
WoWscape donnations (wich are TONS of donnations)
Ascent donnations (wich are not low aswell)
+ he doesn't need to pay for half of the stuff that is developed cuz normal people like you and me developed a lot of stuff for ascent
+ everyone uses ascent nowadays... What would you like more?
You think too much about money but money is not the only thing you need
and also the fact that blizz can sue him if he asks money for it... and btw: ascent is not listed as learning project if i remember correct
