I used to use firehack back when it was still alive and i remember it had lua files with exploits like cast while moving and things like that. Were those done purely in lua or did firehack have to do things in memory to make those work?

I dont know if it's still relevant for you, but the short answer is no. WOW uses Lua as a way of communication between the user interface and the game engine. Almost every action you do in game (e.g. press hotkey, send messages, log out) executes some Lua lines, that hook the more deep game-engine functions, and those functions then update animations, render talking-cloud above the character and etc.
Its most likely that they were using some clever way of batching, or RAM/Batch manipulation
