How-To? Overfill items?

A "friend" showed me his game. Here's the screenshot with 1382/350 items. How is that shit possible? Is there a hidden cheat to stack up on way more items? When looting pokestops, it shows "Bag is full".

He botted and never logged in until high level, having full inventory before hand and then getting all the leveling bonus items at the same time which add on to your total items regardless of your current capacity.

Out of curiosity can Niantic see the items you're holding? Does anyone know?

I have regular items but I'm wondering if they could see how suspicious it looks for someone to not log in after 30+ levels to get the bonus

Yes they can see this and many other things which would indicate someone is botting. Now if they will do something about it or not...
