Path of Exile Open Beta!

Hey everyone, Nerfme here with an update about an upcoming dungeon crawler, Path of Exile (Path of Exile).




This new action-RPG is being produced by Grinding Gear Games (Grinding Gear Games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), a relatively unheard of company that can either shoot to the top of development studios, or dig a hole for themselves with this release. It is meant to fill the shoes of Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2’s disappointed fan bases. This is a large task for Grinding Gear Games, with all the lackluster releases of popular titles in the genre; people are more likely to become harsher critics.

In Path of Exile, the player has been exiled from their homeland to the corrupted and deeply hostile continent of Wraeclast. Alone, or with other exiles, they must develop their skills and discover powerful magical artifacts in order to survive the challenges of a cutthroat post-apocalyptic fantasy world.

Features to look forward to:
- Randomly Generated levels and items for replay-ability
- Large range of talent (skill) paths to choose from (example of options: Example skill page)
- PvP- Both tournament style and world PvP in small and large groups
- Planned expansions to be released
- 6 Character classes (seen in video below)
- Realm splitting based only on region (NA/EU/Oceania are examples)
- Communal hubs without low player caps to serve as LFG and trading areas
- Buyable character upgrades (aesthetic) and realm/account transfers and character renaming

One of the best features about this new title is the price, it is completely free to download and play! Being their first major title, with lots on the line, this was a smart move. Many people bought Diablo 3 upon release and were disappointed, then went to Torchlight 2, and were similarly unimpressed. This will allow players to immerse themselves in PoE without sacrificing anything more than time. Also, all player characters from open beta will be carried over to the official release, so you can get an early start! All closed beta players, however, have had their characters reverted to level 1 and wiped to a clean slate. GGG has stated it was “the final wipe the game will ever have.”

I have been playing this game now for a couple of days. The only downside atm is that since it's beta it's only up until act 3. I'm in love with this game. It's Diablo 2 all the way to the map on the screen (Yes there is a way to resize the map to a little scroll wheel on the top right). All characters can do anything with their passive skills. It's a huge grid reminisce of FFX's sphere grid, making you be able to do a melee wizard or a fast dancing rogue swinging a greataxe. I really enjoy how the questing works as well as how much detail they have so far put into the areas. Global chat is a good idea, but suffers from Diablo 3 syndrome atm of it takes about 2 seconds for a post to go from bottom of chat to top of chat.

The skill gems are a really good idea. Instead of each of the classes having their own abilities, all of the abilities are given by gems you can socket into your armor. The gems level off experience your character gains and do have level requirements as well as stat req's. Again going with the ability to have your character pretty much be anything you want it to be. Another weird part is there's no money. Everything is done on a barter system even selling your junk items to vendors. Scrolls of Wisdom (Scrolls of Identify) are a main type of currency so be sure to save up on them and don't identify items unless your may want to equip it.

Scrolls are not a main type of currency and are very easy to get, you can vendor white items for them, you can also vendor the worst orb (Orb of Transmutation) for 4 scrolls.

You can check Path of Exile Currency Exchange Rates (not 100% updated) for a rough currency value, scrolls and orbs of transmutation aren't even on there since they're worth nothing.

So go ahead and identify all the items you want, identified items also vendor for Orbs of Alteration which are better than transmutation (vendoring unidentified)

yea scrolls are garbage im level 49 and have like 80 wisdoms

Totally love this game, it fills the void that Diablo 3 should have filled after D2:LoD. The items are about 100x easier to read than D3 items, there are a crazy amount of stats and other mechanics that can roll on these items, and the ability to reroll anything is flipping sweet.
