Patch 1.7 implemented a major mod into the game, along with a way to finally obtain leaf blocks legitimately. These changes have allowed creators to expand their projects into more magnificent structures without the need to modify their .jar files. Here's a quick roundup on what was in patch 1.7, and the bugfixes in 1.7.3.
Shears
Shears allow one to cut leaves off a tree to store for later. They are also now used to obtain wool off sheep, granting 1-4 blocks of wool per sheep instead of only 1 block if the sheep is killed. This change is speculated to have occurred due to Notch's streamlining of the game in anticipation for the release in November as sheep are likely to regrow their wool. To make shears you will need 2 Iron Bars arranged like so:
This allows it to be made in the 2x2 crafting grid in your inventory, making it very easy to create another set on the fly if yours happen to break. Here is a short clip of the shears in action:
As you can see, normal rules still apply to leaf blocks. They must be placed within 4 spaces of a wood block or they will decay.
Pistons & Sticky Pistons
Hippoplatimus' mod, Pistons was implemented into the official Minecraft jar after 2 previous patches worth of development. Pistons allow you to move up to 12 blocks in any direction. The only block that will not be pushed is obsidian. Sticky Pistons work the same way but will pull back the block touching the arm when powered down. Here's how you make both a normal and sticky piston:
It's better to be seen than talked about, so here's a small clip about it:
TNT Changes & Fence change
The fuse for TNT will now longer be lit when punched. It can now only be lighted via an electrical current or fire. Fences can now be stacked without having to do some trickery.
1.7.3 Bug Fixes
Ice Blocks can now be pushed without turning to water sources
Booster Rails are no longer powered when there is no current to them
Hacking clients can no longer change text on a sign in multiplayer
Minecraft Adventure Update
More information has been released on how the adventure update will re-design Minecraft. Notch has said that the game is very good on the creative side, but lacks the substance to be a real "game".
So far, the list of major changes are as follows:
Randomly Generated Dungeons with greater complexity
New Biome generation code (Possibly larger biomes)
Working Creative mode (Can also be set to individual people)
Critical hits
Sprinting
NPC Villages
"More Farming Options" (Carefully worded as could be interpreted as more items to farm, or more ways to farm the current ones)
As a final note, Patch 1.8 will feature Hold to Charge Bows, this probably will affect their range!
That's all we have time for unfortunately. What are your thoughts? Leave a comment if you have a speculation into what will be in either the Adventure Update or patch 1.8! thanks for reading and happy Minecrafting!
