Does one need to own the game to play it?
It won't go past "Authenticating" for me

Looks like, yes. Probably later someone clever will make an emulator or find another way to play without a subscription .
For me game running only with command-line argument "-graphicsapi Null" (which, as I understand it, completely disables the graphics, because I hear only sounds and see black screen). In EVERY ONE another cases game just crashed - I tryed all command-line arguments which I founded in internet and all parameters in War3Preferences.txt. Someone know what it can be?
Ironically to found a way to download the game and share with others, but not be able to run it. Maybe over time, the developers will tune something and everything will be better.

Legendary
Tool that enables offline play and HD assets in Warcraft III: Reforged.
WC3RUnlocker.exe v0.1
WC3RUnlocker.exe v0.2 now works as launcher if you put it into folder where Warcraft III.exe is, still can run from anywhere but won't start game in this case
WC3RUnlocker.exe v0.3 same as v0.2 plus read instructions in console
WC3RUnlocker.exe v0.4 put unlocker into your "Warcraft III Beta\x86_64" folder and run, then read instructions in console (race is set to random, you can restart mission through game menu until you get race you want)
Use at your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damages
v0.1 and v0.2 only compatible with client build 1.32.0.13369
v0.3 works with client build 1.32.0.13485
v0.4 works with client build 1.32.0.13594
To launch client use -launch command line arguments for x86_64\Warcraft III.exe.
If that doesn't work, try -launch -region="beta". You can also set locale with -locale enUS switch.

Don't download the WC3RUnlocker.exe file, it contains a trojan, the windows 10 virus scanner detects it.

The crack is working well, and TOM_RUS is well known here, I've used his sandbox for all wow beta. I'm pretty sure it's a false positive, but you are right to be suspicious
