Found this nifty plugin on vBulletin.org:

Users get notiifcations every time someone posts on their threads, posts, and profile posts. The functionality and looks are very similar to Facebooks.

It might be something worth checking out in the near future. It works with VB 4.x.x

So it is basically just using the "subscribed forums/threads" feature that we already have, but that goes to ur UserCP so you would get the notifications in the corner?

Yeah from what I gather from the picture it will add the notifications to the top right corner.
