    Problem with CPU?

My friend and i were playing BF3 and we were wondering why he is only getting 20ish fps (on caspian boarder) he had a good GFX card so we checked his CPU and it is a 'AMD Phenom II X4 965be' but was underclocked to 1GHz for some reason (ratio of 5). So i cranked it back up to its stock settings and it ran okay - until i started prime95 which is when after a few seconds his pc froze. We managed to get it to 2.2Ghz and it raised his BF3 FPS to 40fps - but still crashed a few secs after starting prime95. Could this be a PSU problem?

Did you raise the voltage too? Stock voltage is 1.375v.

most likely yes, if its a tiny PSU say ~400w; i know bf3 cranks my fans up to keep everything smoothly flowing at 60fps and that the gpu gets up into the 80c.. id say replace the psu to 550w +; and clean /figure out a better cooling system to be safe when the gpu will be able to get hotter with more power.

Now i only passively meddle with clocking, how in the world did his get underclocked? and if you find that out you found your problem.

Do you have the rest of the stock settings for the CPU?

Set your core multiplier to x17 and your voltage to 1.375v and you should be fine.

It's not a psu problem if it automaticly underclocks itself. It sounds as the cpu does not get enough power because of the voltage settings, I've had the same problem before. Maybe your friend have some power saving program running? They usualy get installed if you install everything on your motherboard cd.

Voltage was set to auto. The the multiplier was set to 5 in the bios, so whoever set it up for him must of done it. Will do some testing and report back!

Oh, you should set them all manualy so no program can take controll if them. Each multiply equals 200mhz by the way.

Uh, make sure Cool and Quiet is disabled, if the underclocking problems still won't go away, manually set the clocks / vcore (core voltage) for the CPU. Look up the specifications on AMD's website to make sure you get the correct voltages/ratios.
