The game is free to play, You can buy certain recipes to make items but its not nessesary as you can just buy items made already from other players. Characters are very very VERY customizable, no 2 look exactly alike.

There are Different races with a variety of different abilities you can aquire from the beginning, Leveling is faster than in wow and you get some epics from certain quests in the beggining. more info on the game is here:
