Career in App + Web Dev - Where to start?

As the title says, where to start. I have alot of free time & only a general knowledge of IT, i need to specialise in something if i plan on getting somewhere.

If i planned on getting into app dev or web, where would be a good place to start? What languages + programs?
If anyone has any turorials or ebooks, it would be much appreciated.

I have been looking at the courses on team tree house. They seem to be pretty decent, the only problem is i can't afford to pay as I'm unemployed

Use google! As for game dev, I have 0 knowledge, but for web pick any:

    - Python
    - Ruby
    - PHP
    - ASP (before maclone comes to this thread)

You don't really need courses, start building and you will learn along the way. Start with something simple like a blog site. So google "php login form" and learn from the code, remake it, modify it. This is a way that suits me, as I find it easy to understand the written code, so I can mod it to my needs later on. After 5 sites like this, you'll get the hang of it and be able to write your own. Also helps for your portfolio =)

What you might want to consider is Wordpress for instance, as many of the freelancing jobs revolve around it. You'll still need to know PHP, but you'll need to know WP as well. Sites like odesk offer a variety of jobs for every category (ruby, python, php, asp) but there's a lot more wp jobs than any other.

Try it, have fun with it, something will suit you best. For me, it was PHP because it's rather easy to understand/learn and it's fun.

    Peace

It really depends on what you want to make.... some languages are better than others for certain operations.

    What is your idea?
