Diablo 3...?

I have never played of Diablo 1 or 2...I've heard of Diablo but Ive always though WoW was the best...even though I haven't played wow..so I never payed any attention to Diablo...but I saw the trailer for Diablo 3 and it looks hella hella tight. Wayy better than WoW looks.. my question is could I play it without playing 1 or 2? Do I have to pay monthly like WoW? AND, if someone- hardcore fan played Diablo 1 and 2 and they want to play 3, do they have to start ALL over and build a new character? or can you like transfer them. Diablo 3 IS better than WoW...isn't it?

Diablo 3 can be played, and by most people is, without any knowledge of the previous games.
There are no monthly feeds and you start from the scratch meaning no Diablo 1/2 benefits carry on to 3
.
Diablo 3 cannot really be compared with WoW since they present different genres, D3 being a dungeon crawl and WoW a MMORGP.
I prefer Diablo 3 myself but there's no accounting for taste.
