Question about dual skorns

I have a cat that has duel skorns with only a + 70 crit gem in them. He wants to replace them but he is worried the gem may force a drop. i know he could try to just leave one square open in the inventory and try to jut have room for the gem he is removing but this could also force a drop of a weapon. anybody with experience with this ?
