Amazon just acquired Twitch according to CEO Emmett Shear. The announcement was released earlier today on Twitch.tv.

Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster.
With Amazon purchasing Twitch for $970 million, which is dramatically lower than Google's rumored bid of $1.65 billion. It's been speculated that Google's Copyright platform was too stringent for Twitch.tv. Google’s bid had thus fallen through with the streaming company.

The following quote best represents the future partnership of Amazon and Twitch. Does this also hint that Google wanted to change to much?

We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.
It is clear that Amazon’s manufacturing businesses gives Twitch the money and resources to expand its already popular infrastructure. It would make sense for Amazon to implement Twitch into Amazon Prime, which offers Fire TV exclusive shows and apps. The deal puts Amazon in perfect position to take on YouTube for the gaming scene.

Keep in mind Amazon owns several companies which they allow to do their own thing: Zappos, IMDB, Goodreads and Alexia.

Is this a positive or a negative for the future of Twitch.tv? Only time will tell.
