When Are Names Freed Up?

Do you know when Blizzard will free up names, so others can grab names previously taken?
IIRC they had a huge wave of freeing up names back during the WoD launch, but not since. Is that correct?

If the above is incorrect, is it then based on inactivity and/or being unsubbed? If so, how long?

Was hoping someone more informed than myself could shed some light on how this works.

There was definitely 2 releases in legion, dont think bfa one has hit yet.

Last time I asked a GM they said two years. That was a couple of months ago. Not sure how accurate that is. GMs don't always know what they're talking about from my experience and just make guesses.

Yeah, GMs are frequently giving out wrong/inconsistent information. I've experienced that too on several occasions. Thanks for the info though.

"Character names on accounts that have been inactive for the past two expansions automatically becomes eligible to be used by other characters. We do not assist with releasing character names manually." official answer

As I recall it was 90 days of inactivity on said character should/would free up a name depending on the entire WoW account's activity.
