personally have bought 10k gold since classic started, guildies have bought around 20k or so, none of us have received bans. I've bought and sold 100's of thousands in gold in retail over the years and never once been banned. i have been banned for countless other things, usually exploits and automation. if you get banned for buying / selling gold chances are you talked about it in game or through battle.net. dont be a pleb and talk about illegal activites in monitored atmospheres and you should be good. if on the off chance you eventually do get banned, it was the risk you were willing to take to violate tos in first place.
*edit - better off just dont talk about tos violations at all to anyone and deny all allegations. even a trusted ally can be corrupted by jealousy, and made to turn coat in the ideal of righteousness or greed.

He didn't tell me the exact number, but I think it was 10k+ spread over three orders from the same buyer. I think he started buying gold in November maybe, so about two months until he got banned. I don't know if he was stupid and talked about this shit ingame, as DeMoN mentions, so that could be a reason.
Anyways, although I agree that the risk isn't too great, there definitely is a risk to buying gold as Blizzard do, although not often, ban players for buying and/or selling gold.
Apparantly, a banwave hit some Players who used AFK Bots and bought gold. Are you Guys still fine?
2 buy time, no ban (some month ago).
I know this is an older thread, but I thought I'd offer my personal anecdote:
SWIM purchased 1250g over the course of three separate transactions, since February, all to the same character on a high pop realm. The seller simply sent SWIM the gold through mail, accompanied by several random items.
Two of those times SWIM immediately purchased expensive mats and sent half the gold to their alt. On top of this, SWIM's friend ordered 3k gold over the course of two separate transactions - same method and same seller (2k split in two the first time, 1k the second time). Neither SWIM or their friend have been banned yet, and many people on their server have openly talked about how many people obviously buy gold (nobody has admitted to doing it themselves though, duh).
I honestly think it's very rare to get banned for buying gold, especially on a high pop realm with big sales and trades being made daily.

WHO the f is SWIM?
But thanks for your Insights, thats what I experienced as well.
In real life gold is a safe harbour to Invest and should be part of any diversified Portfolio.
In WoW buying gold is not an Investment. It is consumption, Like buying bread or a TV in real life.![]()

I've bought 4k gold over a month and no issues.
Usually a ban is 6 months for buying/selling wow gold, but then again if youre buying gold it can be avoided by not trading 2k but doing multiple trades with green items in trades, if you do that you are pretty safe and youre pretty safe if youre not buying large sums like 3-5k+ gold
