To do this there are a two things you'll require:

    1. MyWarCraftStudio
    2. Model Viewer
    3. Half a brain

    Why do we need them?

    • MyWarCraftStudio (MWCS) - We use it to open and create MPQ files. We also use it to edit the content of it, if you plan to make any sort of edit, you will need this.
    • Model Viewer - Simply to find the file name of the weapon / armor / item

So let's get to it then!

    1. Pick out the item you want to change. For example, I'll be using Headmaster's Charge.

    2. Next we have to find it's model name to look it up in MWCS. Open your Model Viewer, pick a random character and equip the you want to change.
Then click View on the upper task-bar and click Show Model Control.
A new window then pops up, click the uppermost box, you should get a list of models currently loaded.
If your character is only wielding a weapon, the file with .mdx is the name you want.

    3. Now simply repeat the process for the item you want to swap it to.
For this tutorial, I'll swap it to Shadowmourne.

    4. Okay, so now we have the file names. The name of the model I want to swap was "Stave_2H_Other_D_01" and the name of Shadowmourne's model was "axe_2h_icecrownraid_e_01".
Boot up your MWCS and open the .MPQ file that contains your models texture.
I'm afraid the texture you need could be in any of the .MPQs, so search through them all until you find your texture, but the only thing I can tell you is that generally Vanilla items are in the common.MPQ.
Texture files have a .blp extension!

Once you find it, right-click it and choose Copy Treepath. Paste the treepath into your Notepad, you'll need it later.
The ITEM\OBJECTCOMPONENTS\WEAPON\Stave_2H_Other_D_01Green.blp is your weapon's colour, so make sure it matches.

    5. We have the texture file treepath, now we want the model treepath.
You'll have to look for it in the same way as the texture, but now Vanilla models are generally in the common-2.MPQ.
You'll be looking for a .m2 / .M2 and a .skin file matching the models name.

Once you find them, repeat the process and copy + paste their treepaths into Notepad as well.

    6. Before we search for the textures and models of the weapon we want to switch to, I'll just give a quick overview of the three different extensions.

      • .blp - Files with such an extension are textures.
      • .m2 - Files with such an extension are the models
      • .skin - Files with such an extension tell how to apply a texture to a weapon.

The process for the weapon we want to switch to is basically the same, only instead of copying the treepath, you have to extract the texture(.blp), model(.m2) and .skin file onto your hard disk.

    7. Now is when you get use the treepaths found earlier.
You need to swap the names of the extracted files with the name of the files you got the treepath for.
Note: Don't copy the entire treepath, simply the name of the file.

ITEM\OBJECTCOMPONENTS\WEAPON\Stave_2H_Other_D_01Green.blp - This is the name.

    8. Open up MWCS once again and go Pack --> Create MPQ Archive and name it something like patch-9.
Note: You can't use a same name twice. You can name it patch-# (1-9; a-z)

To add the files, click Pack --> Add file to archive.
Browse until you find the files you renamed earlier and start adding them to the .MPQ one by one.
Make sure you copy the treepaths found earlier in front of the name separately after finding your file!

    9. After adding in the final file, click save (the small floppy disk), make sure your patch is in World of Warcraft/Data folder and go enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Note: This method does not change the weapon's sheath position nor it's additional glow effects. That requires DBC editing.
This method can also be used to change creatures, objects and other items.

    Hi there.
    I have a problem.
The weapon im using in game is for right hand while the weapon i
would like to change to is for left hand.
What do i do to fix that?
Oh, yea and one more thing. Do you save the weapons you are equiping on you character. If you do so, how do i do it?
