Do this to start getting rested XP on your alts

Apparently your previously max-level alts (i.e. current level 50s) only start gaining rested XP once you've logged into them after an expansion launches. It has been like this since TBC.

So even if you don't intend to play your level 50 alts yet, log into each one so that you can start accumulating rested XP in the mean time.

I spotted this somewhere else and others have confirmed it too, thought it would be important to share.

Most of the time we move to Elite so that Blizz DOESN'T see and fix it.

In this case this should be freaking fixed so we don't have to do this haha.

Broken Mechanics are not fun. blizzard only fixes fun when its detected.

I did this and started playing alts like 5 days after. It felt like I had a heap of rested xp but as I was able to get a little into level 54 before the rested xp ran out. How fast does rested xp accumulate? Does warmode on bonus xp eat away at rested? (Was 25% bonus I believe at the time).

Likely a result of the heirloom changes in Shadowlands: Heirloom Changes in Shadowlands - Guides - Wowhead

They've removed the XP bonus from heirlooms and instead added set bonuses that slow down how quickly you go through rested XP (so that it lasts longer):

(2) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by 30%.
(4) Set: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in the outdoors, normal dungeons, and battlegrounds.
(5) Set: Gaining a level triggers Burst of Knowledge, dealing (X) Holy damage to nearby enemies and granting you 40% (Primary Stat) for 2 min. Defeating additional enemies extends this effect, up to 2 min.
(6) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced up to 30%.

As far as I know, heirlooms only last up until level 50... so these effects would have stopped at level 51. But just leveling from 50-51 means that you would have used a lot less of your rested XP that you are used to.
