Monsters that are skull level to you don't automaticly kill you when they notice you, and even then, you're... level 9ish, what does it matter if you die?

Well I ended up using a speedhack/mountain climb combo, to get there.

I'm not sure if Im doing something wrong, but every time the totem does it's thing, the guards think I did the attacking and come after me.

Try using Stoneskin totem, it doesn't have any negative effects on the opposing faction and has the same effect (the OMG A TOTEM LETS HIT IT KTHXBAI effect, as I like to call it.)
