Gearing Prot Pala (Pre-raid)

Since I saw Stangcobras guides to gear a prot/DPS DK, I got the inspiration to create a guide for all wannabe prot paladins out there. Played a prot pala since 2005, were alliance at first but transfered to horde in '07 (reroll from the beginning of course)

Ok, one point you all tanks should think of. You always NEED 535def for tanking heroics and 540 for tanking bosses, this is 'cause otherwise a boss is capable of critting you which result in a wipe most of the time. I've heard people being critted even at 535-539 def in heroics, so always stay over 540.

Talent Spec: Wowhead, don't dare armory here, stupid Blizzard stalkers :P
The gear is simple, either crafted gear or ToC 5 (normal gear), some heroic, some will also be obtained by farming emblems.

First of all you need gear so you can farm heroics, otherwise people will reject you, and you will be the worst tank ever
For this I prefer simple, crafted or quests gear.
Weapon: Crescent of Brooding Fury
Shield: Titansteel Shield Wall
Helm: Tempered Titansteel Helm
Shoulders: Tempered Saronite Shoulders
Bracers: Tempered Saronite Bracers
Legs: Tempered Saronite Legplates
Feet: Tempered Titansteel Treads
Gauntlets: Tempered Saronite Gauntlets
Chest: Tempered Saronite Breastplate
Belt: Tempered Saronite Belt
Necklace: Titanium Earthguard Chain
Ring: Titanium Earthguard Ring
Ring: Unsmashable Heavy Band - This ring is from a heroic instance, but it's blue and can't consider it as heroic.
Trinket: Essence of Gossamer This ring is from a heroic instance, but it's blue and can't consider it as heroic instance (AN HC)
Trinket: The Black Heart


That's what you can easily obtain quickly for pre-heroics gear. (Remember that this gear is cheap and therefore I don't include more expensive items as listed below.)

The heroic gear include:

Weapon: Red Sword of Courage - Nice sword, sometimes you have a bad droprate.
Belt: Indestructiable Plate Girdle or Shieldwarder Girdle <-- Much cheaper than the other belt. But maybe you want the emblems for other pieces.
Shoulders: Conqueror's Aegis Shoulderguards
Leggings: Wyrmguard Legplates
Helm: Conqueror's Aegis Faceguard
Gauntlets: Gauntlets of the Royal Watch
Feet: Spiked Deathdealers
Chest: Conqueror's Aegis Breastplate
Bracers: Bracers of Dalaran's Parapets or Saronite Swordbreakers <-- Usually cost shitload of cash, but some people have all gold in the world ^^
Necklace: Shard of the Crystal Forest
Ring: Titanium Earthguard Ring
Ring: Mark of the Relentless
Trinket: The Black Heart
Trinket: Essence of Gossamer

Leg enchant: Frosthide Leg Armor
Helm Enchant: Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector
Shoulder enchant: Greater Inscription of the Gladiator - I know it's a PvP enchant, but there's no better unless you lack defense rating which also require exalted with Sons of Hodir: Greater Incription of the Pinnacle
Cloak: Titanweave - Give 16 defense, you can also get 23 haste or 16 agility if you don't need the defense/avoidance, but I recommend sticking with the defense.
Chest: Super Health
Feet: Heavy Borean Armor Kit
Hands: Armsman or Heavy Borean Armor Kit if you feel you can keep threat without problems
Waist: Eternal Belt Buckle
Bracers: Major Stamina
Weapon: Blade Ward - Expensive on some servers, on my server it's 300g so pretty cheap. There's really no other good weapon enchant.
Shield: Titanium Plating
or
Defense
Use the plating if you don't need any defense. 81 block rating is better than the avoidance you receive from defense as a paladin.

For the gems you want to gem just pure stamina or defense if you lack it.
Don't bullshit me paladins still love SbV, 'cause we don't since TBC.

This is the same pre-gear I got on my paladin and now I'm in mainly iLevel 245 gear and in an awesome guild :P

Black heart is a normal dungeon, and it's... a good trinket until ToC 25m

first off looking at the spec its subobtimal. A better spec would be:

reasoning:
1 the drop of seals of the pure might mean a tps loss or dmg loss but thats why you picked up Crusade wich gives you a 6% dmg increase of ALL youre skills so not only youre seals.
2 reckoning is debatable but if youre serious about tanking and pull it high end its better to drop it since its to much RNG to get it proc instead pick up Divine Sacrifice and its followup Divine guardian for a longer last and stronger sacred shield and if youre not maintanking in raids a raidwide 50% dmg reduction for 10sec
3 Spiritual attunement 1point should suffice. especialy with lower gear you will be taking more dmg gettin more heals thus getting mana more often. and youre mana should be replenished mosly by BoSanc
4 now in the ret tree we got 3extra main talents giving you 3% party/raidwide crit, an AP reduction similar to demo shout/roar but doesnt need a cast its a proc wich is up pretty much all the time, and last but not least the 15% movement speed wich allow you to move infront of the group if yer grouping with impatiant people or if u like AoE pulling heroics like me :P

Dont take it as critisism its just pointers ^^ the spec is fine for starters but they might wanna change when they get more serious about tanking more then just heroics. the rest of the guide looks good. You might wanna add the BoE crafted ulduar/ToC patterns for people that need a gold dump and i believe there was a chest defence enchant.

Well, that's the point, it's gearing up and speccing for pre-raids, i.e. doing heroics.
But 15% movement speed is kinda stupid, people in a good raiding guild shouldn't move ahead and ninjapull before the tank :P
Neither should people in a group.. if they do, let them die.

then you have never been in a pug with impatient tards that cant w8 to stroke their epeen and go dps ahead. also some bosses require movement so its pretty handy to get away from it easier or get back to them after lets say a knockback. EG for this is northern beasts p2 with the rooted jormungar and p3 with the icehowl charge.

Well, require movement have never been a problem, and I have been in HC's with tards, I just let them die, I always do HCs with a friend of mine so I guess that's why I don't care (Healer and DPS friend).
I don't care if 2 DPS die 'cause they're impatient : D But thanks for the feedback, others can read for items! !! ! ! !! !
But ye, Icehowl at ToGC this talent could help if you're slow on the movement.
