To all those raid-nuts out there that are looking for help on getting gear for Ulduar, I've come to help you with a short, but informative article about what numbers are needed for whichever role you are attempting to fill.
First off: 10 man Ulduar, the essential group is going to have three healers, two tanks and five DPS. Hard mode is a different story, and something I've yet to experience, but I will update this with requirements for that as I progress there.
In this guide I will put a basic requirement for Ulduar 10 man, and give you tips and hints on how to achieve these numbers with minimal time involved, but of course, if you're one of those 'I never any drop' players, you may need a bitmore time.
Tanking - You want minimum 38k Hit Points raid buffed. Essentially 30-31k unbuffed. You want good avoidance, I first went into Ulduar with 25% dodge, 22% parry and 33% block (I tried a block-oriented Warrior) and it was pretty successful. You need to have general knowledge of strafe-tanking. You can't be a tank and just sit on the spot and start throwing threat out there, you need to know how to do each encounter.
Healing - You need a minimum of 2200 spell power, this is easily attainable with Naxx 10-25 man loot, but also your spec has a lot to do with how much spell power you get, from bonuses and such. Also, you can't just 'heal' you have to understand that healers need to have assignments, and can't just be 'doing their thing' unless they are really knowledgeable about their class. Hopefully everyone should understand this by now.
Damage - This is probably the most strenuous class to get into Ulduar with. You need a minimum of 3.5k DPS to be successful passed the Siege Area of Ulduar. This is very weapon and gear dependent for many classes, except for maybe Death Knights & Ret Pallies, this may take time to get your numbers this high.
Here is a general tip for all of you young raiders: don't bother with 10 man guild runs through content.
Guilds doing 10 man content is pointless when you're able to clear four of the five Northrend raid dungeons with Pick-Up-Group raids (PuG Raids). Of course, not all pugs are successful, but getting a guild that can farm 25 mans is the best way. Especially if they're looking for the class you play. You'll attain gear that way faster than any other method.
Generally, you'll want to PuG Naxxramas , Obsidian Sanctum, Vault of Archavon and Eye of Eternity in their 25 man forms. Depending on your server, some pugs can clear these no problem, but others need to go through a learning process. Try to get yourself into groups that are half-guild players or a known solid unit of operation.
I geared two characters at 80 within three months. One was through the PvP system, one through PvE, both are just as time consuming, but I'd say for the experience of World of Warcraft, the MMO aspect, go for the PvE side of things. If you want PvP go play on Xbox Live or an FPS game on the PC.
