Concerning the @blizzard.com e-mail scams!

Huston, we have a problem!

- Hello again guys. I have no idea if this has been posted recently (but i could'nt find anything about it, so i thought, what the heck).
The thing is, - With these new websites where you can send fake emails, such as fakemailer.net, there has been brought to us, a new problem! You see, i was just fooling around with the websites, to see how they actually work. So i tried to send an e-mail to one of my buddies with the sender email: [email protected] (<- GM mail)
And after that, called him to see if he'd recieved the e-mail, and yes - He had! And it looked perfect. - Almost like a real blizzard mail!

But a few hours later my friend got an e-mail from the actual blizzard account crew, and they wrote something like;

"Hello mr....
We have confirmed that someone has tried scamming your world of Warcraft account, by sending you a fake e-mail containing questions about your private account information.." (Or some bullcrap like that, i'll upload a picture later)

It seems that blizzard has installed somekind of trickwire, so if a custommer recieves an @blizzard.com e-mail, it automaticly sends out a warning! - And that.. sucks monkeyballs.

Is this a new thing, or have i just missed it?

If you use an email already in use by the domain holder or whoever, it doesn't work well.. Not sure what happens, but meh. Just use an email like [email protected] and say in the email that you are a GM with the alias vashmir.

I can send you a fake mail from any address I want (even from your own) and it won't trigger shit. It's easy to do if you know anything about mail protocols.

However, it won't alert anyone. Only if you set the replyto field to the fake email, or don't set it at all.

Anyone with basic perl skills (or unix for that matter) could easily pull this off. Or, anyone with a good mail server setup.

Yeah, I really didn't think that something like that was possible, unless the fake mailer sends some kind of notification email to the From address. Or maybe your friend replied to it?

I can confirm this. Alittle less then a week ago a scamer sent me a fake @blizzard.com email. I relized it was fake right away due to the horrible grammer and spelling. (this scammer was a complete retard) The next day i checked my email and I had one from the real blizzard and it stated someone was trying to scam my account via email ect.

Dare someone to email blizzard and say "WHY THE **** ARE U TRACKING WHAT IM GETTING IN MY MAIL YOU PERVERTED SICK BASTARS, HERES SOMETHING FOR YOU 2 TRACK, SUCK MY NADS" or something like that, because technically this is what it really seems like :P

OR Blizzard monitors Fake Mailer and checks for scam messages and sends a warn message to the victim.

I can confirm this aswell, cause when you try to sell your account you get 1000's of fake emails of ppl tryin to give steal accs. Got an really good one 3 days ago with @blizzard.com and everything and then like 3 hours later i got a mail from real blizzard saying someone is trying to scam me...

Yea this has happened to me many times. Really hurts cause i can no longer scam that easily. Now i might have to work to scam an account (ZOMG NOES!!!!)
