"Item Caching" ?

Basically an item that is currently on a mob/player can be queued by the database. IF it's not on a player/mob it wont be able to be queried. So if the server reset, they were the only guild/people online. They can zone into the raid -> link the item -> if it didn't pop a tool tip that means the boss didn't have that item yet, if it did pop a tool tip that means it has a strong chance of being on illidan.

But back then when only 1 rogue had Illidans glaives/server, it was easier to do it.
Today it would be pretty hard that noone from your realm got the item you want and is online
