best pve dps mage build for cata and is mage viable?

So i've heard mixed things about mags on cata 4.0.6.. i've heard that frost is best dps overall and that some are saying that mage is crap dps because of all the bugs on the mage in cata?

so can someone please tell me if a good pve dps mage is viable and if so which one should i go? fire right?

I'm assuming you mean for Private Servers, as you referenced patch 4.0.6?
IF it's a private server, Arcane is the best PvE DPS, and Frost is the best PvP spec.
If it's retail, Fire is the best PvE DPS, and Frost is the best PvP spec.

And yes, mages are viable, they've been top-end DPS for most of cata
