Need Help Setting Up WoW Server..

i'm interested in getting a 4.0.6 - 4.1.0 WoW server

i have a private server with decent spec's and decent speeds in both up and down. however i have no idea how to get a wow server setup.

it will be for general use and to test out edits and mods i plan to make..
So i would like one with currently the least bugs or the one with the most support available when bug testing. if possible

Current OS: Windows XP Pro
however i have a choice of several Different OS's

CentOS 5.6
Fedora 14
Win 2008 Server
Ubuntu 11.04 desktop
Gentoo minimal

TrinityCore is the most stable out-of-the-box, in my opinion, here are 2 guides how to set it up for Windows and Linux.

ok i decided as facerolling was the only one to offer any advice i went with trinity.
i've followed his step by step guide via the link provided. however when compiling i am getting this error message..

i've hit a little problem hopefully the last one.... firstly i have no clue what i'm doing however Facerolling showed my the How-to:Win - TrinityCore Wiki guide for installing a 4.0.6 - 4.1 wow server, so i thought i'd give it a shot after screwing around with it all day compiling and databasing and extracting and downloading.. i finally came to the section..

Extracting DBC/Maps/VMaps =

Now that you have extracted the maptools to your WoW client directory, use the following instructions to extract the necessary .DBC, .maps, and (optional) .vmap files needed for the server to run. 
 Run your WoW Client once (the login screen is enough). You need to do this so that the 'mapextractor.exe' knows where your WoW Client is and where to extract the files from. 
 Run mapextractors.exe. 
 After this program is finished, move the dbc and maps folders to the location of your TrinityCore worldserver.exe and authserver.exe binaries (D:\Build\bin\Release\). 
(Optional, but recommended) Run makevmaps3_simple.bat. It will create two new folders: buildings and vmaps. The buildings folder is completely useless and can be safely deleted. 
 Move the vmaps folder to the same directory as dbc, maps, and the TrinityCore binaries.

however not realizing this i did what it said then continued however when come to launching the authserver.exe and worldserver.exe files when finished. i got a crash report from worldserver.exe stating that the /maps folder was empty.

and indeed it was.. however upon checking on a completely different computer the same thing has happened /dmc folder is full but /maps folder is empty.

any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Trinitycore only supports up to 3.3.5a, I believe.

then why did facerolling suggest trinity if i stated i was looking for 4.0.6 - 4.1 server code?

Use Skyfire instead. The process for compiling it is exactly the same as TrinityCore, so you didn't waste your time.

even compiling via skyfire i'm still getting an empty map folder

You need to fill it with your Vmaps, use the Skyfire Vmap extractor, also I apologise, I did not read the 4.0.6 - 4.1.0 request.

As facerolling has said, make sure you aren't confusing maps with vmaps. They use different extractors and you need both for the server to run correctly.
If you're still getting an empty map folder, make sure your 4.1 client was the client that was most recently opened. (Just start the game and close it.)

If you're still getting an empty map folder make sure that your client has been FULLY downloaded.
