yes, you can play it "single player" if you install your own private server and connect to that, but you still need to patch from the version you have when you buy the discs to the version you make your private server.

if you have a friend who has a high speed connection you can have them download patches for you, i did that when i was on cellular dial up for about 6 months, i had bad lag but wow was still playable but took days to download a 300mb patch file.
