Well, to start off, I'll state now that I did indeed search for similar topics but was unable to find any. If this is a repost or near to one, I apologize in advance.
I also hope that this time, I put it in the right section...
How to be a good Game Master, a guide by Endure of Mmowned.
There is a lot that goes into being a successful Game Master (GM) on a server and I'll try and cover some things that have stood out and/or is common sense that some people just don't realize.
First things first, if your going to be a a decent GM, you need to get there in the first place. thebigman had created a guide for a good dm application, but the link isn't working for me. Here it is anyways, incase it is fixed: http://www.mmowned.com/forums/world-...m-dev-app.html
Number 1:
As said in thebigman's thread, there is a very large social aspect in being a GM, its not all about being able to code and knowing a database forwards and backwards. To be a good GM, you will need to be able to interact with people, and that will require that you are able to listen to what they have to say, and know how to act and what to say back. Sure, you could be reclusive in game, but in my opinion, that's no fun. Good grammar is another thing that will help, and I urge you to as well. While I am certainly not the best with words, I try my hardest to keep it up.
Number 2:
Being a GM can require a lot of time, but what it requires more is determination. Being lazy when your working in game just doesn't cut it. If your going to start a project, don't stop halfway through because there is something that has deterred you from finishing. Take a break if you need, but if it really just can't be done, they maybe it is too hard or impossible, but you need to make sure there isn't a way around it before you stop.
Number 3:
Try your hardest. If there is a simple way to do something that won't be as good, or a harder way that will be better, take the hard way, in the end, it will result in a much better finished project. Don't be in a rush, if you have a deadline for something, and you can't get it done in time, just say so. For myself, if I were an admin and a GM on a project said they couldn't get in done, I'd rather have a really good half finished project than a not so good finished one. Ask for help from another GM if it is something really important, but otherwise, its best not to rush if you can help it.
Number 4:
Learn the basics of what you can. If you have no idea on how to do anything with LUA code, it might be something to look into. The same goes for anything else. You don't need to know how to do everything on the server, but at least try to learn new things once and a while.
Number 5:
Summing all these together, its important to be balanced between them, don't spend all your time chatting, or all your time on a project that you want to finish. Keep a wide view of things to do, and hopefully your reign as a GM will go smoothly.
I hope this guide covered some of the things required to be a decent GM, and I hope you enjoyed it, thanks!
