Keeping customs after DB update?

If I use NCDB how do i update it without losing my custom content?

Can I just back up my current DB (as whole not separate tables) and then after i install the new NCDB excute my old one into it? Would that allow it to copy over everything that is different between them (because everything that is the same just gets replaced with the same thing again?), thus upgrading it?

Is there any way to just take my custom stuff off my server and then put it into the new one?

I did a search on how to update the DB but none of them told me how to keep custom content. And if they did they were poorly written and hard to understand.

just update using the changesets or you could backup your database as a sql dump then update then re execute it over.
