Shaman Tank Guide - Shaman Tanking Burning Crusade

Shaman Tank Guide - Shaman Tanking Burning Crusade

I'm Caperfin. Shaman tank is my forte. This guide culminates many years of work. If a topic is not addressed or you have questions, see my Livestream.

    Introduction
Can Shamans tank? The short and to the point answer is, yes. You might be rubbing your eyes in disbelief of this answer. Maybe conjuring a ten page manifesto about how only warriors can and should tank. Although, I can go on a long rant about how there are many other classes that can tank, today, I’ll be focusing on our totemic friend, the shaman.

The topic of viable and optimal is contentious as some don’t see the difference or mix them up and levy a misguided philosophy onto it. Optimal is the most efficient and foolproof solution that eliminates as many negative variables as possible and favors an easier path. Viable or often referred to as: possible, seen as the more challenging path but to many is a greater personal triumph. Shaman Tank is labelled as viable.

Many Shaman tanks agree their motivation is from the glory of seizing a feat the rest of the realm dares not try. If this resonates with you, please continue reading. You shaman tank if you want a challenge and a refreshing perspective from a 15 year old game. If it wasn’t obvious before, shield bearing is a sizable undertaking.

    Race
Dreanei Shaman, thus the Alliance, can have all classes use Bag of Marbles on a raid boss. Tauren Shaman get Endurance & being Horde grants Razorhide (+25% armor). Conclusion: Alliance triumphs, if Bag of Marbles is involved, otherwise Horde Tauren wins.

    Professions
Leatherworking (LW): Greater Drums of Battle & Greater Drums of Restoration.
Engineering: Goblin Rocket Launcher (45yrd pull) & Super Sapper Charge.
If you get good rings, (see Ring List) drop LW, get Enchanting & use Enchant Ring - Stats, afterwards leave Ench & repick LW. Technically, Blacksmithing is best since Twisting Nether Chain Shirt could avert a death.

    Threat
Leading threat spells: Frost Shock, Stormstrike & Lightning shield. Consumable items deal threat, ex: Super Rejuvenation Potion based on half of the Health & Mana gained. Damage items, ex: Supper Sapper Charge deal threat equal to the damage, so do reflective Buffs, ex: Thorns. (see Threat List)

    Threat Reducers
Get a threat tracking addon, ex: ThreatClassic 2. Items reduce threat, ex: Fetish of the Sand Reaver(50%) & Prism of Inner Calm. Mage have: Invisibility & (Burning Soul). Warlock: Soulshatter. Paladin: Blessing of Salvation & Blessing of Protection (prevents aggro). Shaman: Tranquil Air Totem (stacks w/Salvation). Hunter redirect threat: Misdirection. Rogue & hunter wipe threat: Vanish & Feign Death. Items can taunt a boss: Masterwork Target Dummy. Classes in the 30-40 yard range won’t get aggro t'ill they surpass the threat level of the mob’s current target by 30%, as opposed to 10% for melee classes. (see more)

    Totems
Totems can't deal threat for you. Common totems:,Grace of Air Totem, Healing Stream Totem & Stoneskin Totem. For Aoe Tanking: Stoneclaw Totem followed by Fire Nova Totem & Earth elemental Totem. Other Shamans can Earth elemental totem to help. (see AoE Tanking)

    Talents
For dungeons 12/49/0, if survival no longer is an issue drop Spirit Weapons. For raids, Main-Tank: 16/45/0. Off-tank: 12/49/0.

    Rotation
Pre Pull: Cast Lightning Shield. Get all Buffs the group can supply. Cast WF weapon. Place: Stoneskin Totem, Grace of Air Totem & Healing StreamTotem. Mark the mobs in front of you by right-clicking their portrait, pick Raid Target Icon, choose from either a Skull = kill first, a red X = kill second, a blue square = Hunter trap and a moon = Polymorph.
Pulling: Hunter use Misdirection on you & pull the mob, if no Hunter, use Goblin Rocket Launcher to pull. Cast (max rank) Lightning Bolt, followed by as many r1 Lightning Bolt as possible to trigger: Elemental Focus. Lastly, Frost Shock.
Combat: During a fight, use relevant ranks of Frost Shock that suits mana & threat. Stormstrike can’t be downranked but is also used in similar cases. If Lightning Shield expires, cast it. If you suddenly might die, equip a defensive weapon, ex: Grom'tor's Charge w/Enchant Weapon - Agility & Windfury weapon, use Masterwork Target Dummy (taunts boss), Heroic Potion, Shamanistic Rage, possibly Super Rejuvenation Potion & Major Healthstone.

    Buffs
There's a max of 32 Buffs, avoid nearing the max as it may result in Buffs mistakenly being removed, the addon: Buff Cap Tracker helps. Use Buff Cap Calc to see what Buffs stack. Prioritise gathering defensive Buffs, ex: IronShield Potion before getting Threat Buffs, ex: Juju Might. (see Defensive Buffs). Consumables give passive Buffs & instant effects, ex: Nightmare Seed, Major Healthstone, Dark Rune, Major Rejuvenation Potion, etc...

    Debuffs
A max of 40 Debuffs can be on a mob. The addon, Pitbull will help. Having the most Debuffs is major in raids. There's defensive Debuffs: Insect Swarm & threat Debuffs: Faerie Fire among others (see List#1 & List#2). With the raid leader’s consent, suggest ideal Debuffs without overstepping.

    Gear
Solidify defensive stats when gearing, threat is secondary. A total of 5.6% Crit immunity is needed, PvP gear helps, ex: Gladiator's Linked Helm. The Resilience & Defense stat reduces the chance we're critically struck. Gear List coming soon!

    Enchants
There's two types of enchants, defensive, ex: Enchant Gloves - Superior Agility. And offensive, ex: Enchant Gloves - Threat. Having the Enchanting profession isn't needed to gain its benefits, someone else can do it for us, except for Enchant Ring - Stats. Enchanting is picked when good rings are owned, once they're enchanted, Enchanting can be dropped.

    AoE Tanking
Many actions can further solidify AoE cases, ex: Oil of Immolation, Thorns, Force Reactive Disk, etc... (see List) It’s crucial to switch and attack another target ever so often. In combat, items & spells giving health or mana deal 50% threat divided by each mob. Items also help until a decent amount of threat is gained on all mobs, ex: Masterwork Target Dummy.

    Healing a Shaman Tank
Power Word: Shield & Prayer of Mending should be used whenever possible also Heal over time Buffs, ex: Rejuvenation & Lifebloom (see Buffs). In raid, two healing Druids can have Harold's Rejuvenating Broach & Idol of the Emerald Queen. All healers have unique benefits. Priest: Pain Supression, Shaman: Earth Shield, Paladin: Devotion Aura & Lay on Hands, Druid: Tree of life.

    Group-Raid Composition
With the raid leader’s consent, offer an ideal raid comp without overstepping. In our group, Warlock: Blood Pact, Paladin: Devotion Aura, Druid: Tree of life, Warrior: Commanding Shout. A member (pref healer) can use: Thick Felsteel Necklace. For outside group damage dealing classes, we prefer ranged classes over melee. If melee are needed, rogues are best. Groups with high threat dealers can have a shaman: Tranquil Air Totem. (see Comp List: 5man, 10man, 25man.)
